Hampshire name Brown as captain for 2025 County Championship
HAMPSHIRE Cricket have announced that wicketkeeper Ben Brown will captain the club in the 2025 County Championship.
The 36 year old takes over red-ball captaincy from James Vince, while Nick Gubbins will continue to lead the men's One-Day Cup squad.
The decision to appoint separate captains for different formats means the men's club captain position will remain vacant for the 2025 season.
Brown, who joined Hampshire in 2022 after spending his entire career at Sussex, has been a key figure in the squad. He has featured in 69 matches across the County Championship and One-Day Cup since his arrival.
Expressing his excitement about the role, Brown said: "It’s an honour and I feel incredibly privileged to be elected as captain for the County Championship.
"Coming in and seeing the pictures of those who have done it before me, it feels surreal to be part of that history. As a club, we’re desperate to win the Championship.
"James Vince has been a tremendous leader, and will continue to be in the Blast, and hopefully, I can continue our winning mentality as we push for the four-day title."
Brown enjoyed a successful 2024 season, amassing 657 runs at an average of 41 in the Championship, along with 286 runs at an average of 36 in the One-Day Cup.
He also recorded career-best scores last summer, scoring 139 not out against Northamptonshire in the One-Day Cup opener and 165 not out against Surrey, which helped Hampshire secure their biggest innings victory in County Championship history.
Hampshire’s director of cricket, Giles White, added: "We have been a competitive side in Championship cricket for some time now and have been fortunate to have a number of leaders in the group.
"Ben’s experience and qualities made him the outstanding candidate to lead the side, and we are confident he has the credentials to guide the team as it evolves and pushes for silverware."
Brown captained Sussex in 78 matches between 2016 and 2021 and will make his debut as Hampshire’s red-ball captain against Yorkshire at the Utilita Bowl from April 4-7.
