Liverpool has been drawn against Plymouth Argyle in the FA Cup fourth round, a tie that could evoke mixed memories for supporters.

The teams last met in 2017 when Jurgen Klopp was manager and a 0-0 draw at home against the League Two opponent was understandably seen as a disappointing result. A less-than-convincing 1-0 victory at Home Park followed in the replay that ensured Liverpool progressed, with Klopp unusually presented with a giant Cornish pasty by Plymouth sponsors Ginsters to mark the near 600-mile journey.

But the double header is also remembered due to Klopp making Liverpool history by naming the youngest-ever starting XI, with an average age of just 21 years and 296 days.

That was eventually eclipsed by the side selected in the Carabao Cup quarter-final against Aston Villa two years later, when the senior Liverpool squad was at the Club World Cup and then Under-18 coach Neil Critchley named a youth team for the encounter at Villa Park.

But what happened to that XI that started against Plymouth? Seven years on the players have had contrasting career journeys…

Loris Karius
Sadly, a Liverpool career best remembered for two high-profile gaffs in the Champions League final against Real Madrid just 16 months after the Plymouth tie. He moved out on loan to Besiktas following Alisson’s arrival in 2018 and spent time at Union Berlin. Having joined Newcastle United permanently in 2022, Karius went on to make two appearances before leaving at the end of last season. The 31-year-old is currently without a club.

Trent Alexander-Arnold
You might have heard of this player... In the seven years since that FA Cup tie, the Liverpool academy graduate has gone on to establish himself as one of the best right-backs on the planet. Aged just 18 at the time, this was Alexander-Arnold’s fifth appearance for the Reds. He has since racked up 336 and captained the side in the FA Cup third-round win over Accrington Stanley last weekend.

Joe Gomez
This was the defender’s first appearance in 15 months due to a knee ligament injury and he’s one of two surviving members of the XI who is still on the club’s books. Gomez is currently injured and unlikely to be back for the Plymouth game in a few weeks.

Lucas Levia
The elder statesman in the team at 29, the Brazilian oddly deputized at center-back for the game as Klopp made 10 changes from the previous match. Lucas scored the only goal in the replay at Home Park in what was his final season at Liverpool. He joined Lazio that summer and after five years in Rome returned to Brazil with Gremio. Lucas retired from football in 2023.

Alberto Moreno
One of the more experienced players in the team, but the defender was just 24 at the time. The Spaniard left Liverpool in 2019 after falling behind Andy Robertson in pecking order at left-back and is now playing for Italian side Como. Ex-Red Pepe Reina is his team-mate at the Serie A club, who is managed by Cesc Fabregas.

Kevin Stewart
This was the midfielder’s last season at Anfield as he failed to convince Klopp of his worth in the team. Stewart made 20 Liverpool appearances and went on to play for Hull City and Blackpool before retiring from football in 2023.

Emre Can
Another youthful but established player in this Liverpool side, Can was just 22 at the time. He is currently playing at Borussia Dortmund and is still a German international, nearly seven years after leaving Liverpool on a free to join Juventus.

Ovie Ejaria
At 19, the winger helped to bring down the average age of the team eight years ago. It was one of eight appearances Ejaria made for Liverpool. After three loan moves, he left permanently in 2020 and signed for Reading and then departed the Royals in 2023. He is currently a free agent.

Sheyi Ojo
Another 19-year-old in 2017, Ojo’s career has taken an unexpected turn. After seven loan moves during his time at Liverpool, the attacker signed permanently for Cardiff City in 2022. He departed earlier this season and is now playing for Slovenian champions Maribor.

Ben Woodburn
The 17-year-old was the youngest member of Klopp’s XI against Plymouth and was at one stage Liverpool’s youngest-ever scorer. He’s now at League Two side Salford City after leaving Liverpool permanently in 2022 and spending two years at Preston North End. Now 25, he has also earned 11 Wales caps.

Divock Origi

A Liverpool cult hero, Origi was always on the fringes during his time at Liverpool but repeatedly popped up with memorable moments. Nothing will ever outshine his goal in the 2019 Champions League final as the Reds became European champions for a sixth time. The striker is still at AC Milan but hasn’t played for the club this season and is currently training with the youth team.
