Harlequins need to regain their physical edge, admits Goode

Harlequins are still a team that you should never write off but Leicester Tigers legend and Premier Sports pundit Andy Goode admits they need to regain their physical edge this season.

Quins were beaten away to French giants Toulon last weekend, leaving them in must-win territory this weekend when they host Glasgow Warriors on Saturday, with the 8pm kick-off shown live on Premier Sports.

That means that they may well need to beat the reigning URC champions to make it through to the last 16, a year after going all the way to the semi-finals of the competition.

On that run, they beat Bordeaux-Bègles in a thriller in the quarter-finals before pushing eventual champions Toulouse all the way in the last four.

Their attack has not quite functioned as well this season, and Goode believes that it is a lack of power that is holding them back.

“Quins will look back on their game at the weekend in Toulon, you look at some of the stats and at one point they had 70% possession but in the game the scoreboard is the only thing that counts,” said Goode, who is part of a 34-strong TV team delivering Investec Champions Cup and EPCR Challenge Cup for Premier Sports, the new broadcasters of international club rugby's premier competitions.

“They put on some good patterns and shape but they have no physicality and no bite to get through a well-organised defence.

“Coming up against Glasgow, they are URC champions, Sione Tuipulotu is probably the form player in the tournament at the minute, they are littered with internationals. I like Tom Jordan at 10. The backline has a potential Lions partnership in the centres.

“It sounds bizarre to say this as an Englishman, but you would probably say that Glasgow are favourites. A Scots team going away from home, you’d have normally said not really, but Glasgow have bucked the trend over the last six months.”

As it stands, Quins sit third in their pool on five points, with the four teams from third to sixth split by just a single point.

While a top two place in the group is out of reach, Quins will likely reach the last 16 if they beat Glasgow this weekend.

And with plenty of history between the sides – including Quins beating Glasgow in the knockout stages a year ago – Goode expects there to be no shortage of motivation on both sides.

He added: “Quins won’t be thinking about bonus points, they will just think about winning the game. There is a bit of history between the clubs, Huw Jones had a spell down at Quins, and there’s Danny Wilson's departure from Glasgow then going on to be head coach at Quins.

“They will back themselves to win and you expect the likes of Dombrandt to have a big performance in front of a home crowd. They are a different beast at home, you talk about a kind of Spursy performance in football, you can associate that with Quins as well.

“It’s a bit Quinsy to go away and put on some nice shape but not have enough about you to win games of old. They did the tough stuff last year, going to Bordeaux and winning in the quarter-finals. They will be saying they are not far away, but there are parts of their game that need to be a lot better to get to that point.”
