Manchester United defender Harry Maguire was involved in a heated exchange with Arsenal forward Kai Havertz after accusing the latter of diving to win a penalty during Sunday’s fiery FA Cup third round clash.

Havertz was the villain of the show after missing a crucial penalty during Arsenal’s 5-3 shoot-out defeat, with the German walking straight down the tunnel after the final whistle.

However, he also won a penalty during the second half when Maguire was adjudged by referee Andy Madley to have brought down Havertz in the box, much to the United defender’s fury.

Maguire appeared incandescent after Madley pointed to the penalty spot, protesting his innocence before turning his fury on Havertz, and in a clip caught by television cameras during the live broadcast, he appears to shout “you cheating s---house” in Havertz’s direction.

The two were on a collision course only for Arsenal defender Gabriel to block Maguire’s path, leading to a mass melee between the two sets of players that saw Maguire’s team-mate Manuel Ugarte clash head-to-head with Havertz.

Ugarte escaped any sanction while Madley booked Maguire, and with no VAR available in the FA Cup third round, any calls for dismissal went without review.

Writing for Telegraph Sport, former referees’ chief Keith Hackett said: “The Football Association will no doubt investigate this by charging both teams for failing to control their players.

“I have no doubt that they will look closely at the illegal use of the head. In my opinion there was a clear headbutt from Ugarte and this should have been seen and acted upon. I will be disappointed if the FA do not take action.”

But Havertz was also facing calls to be punished. “The penalty kick is a poor decision by Madley,” Hackett added. “Not only has he made the wrong decision to penalise Maguire, but Havertz should have received a yellow card for an act of simulation.

“Had there been VAR in operation Madley would have been instructed to visit the monitor and encouraged to overturn his decision.”

Luckily for United, goalkeeper Altay Bayindir came to the rescue by saving Odegaard’s penalty effort, before going on to deny Havertz in the shoot-out with the decisive save.

“I just help my team,” Bayindir said. “I am working everyday. I am patient. I just want to help this great team.

“I want to make everyone happy for this great club. I’m working here everyday.

“If you are not playing it doesn’t matter. You have to be ready every minute, every second, if you are a Man Utd player you have to be ready always.

”[Ruben Amorim] is talking with us everyday and he wants to help us. We love him and he’s always trying to do his best. He has a very good relationship with the players and we are trusting him, he is trusting us. We are fighting together.”

The performance also drew praise from United captain Bruno Fernandes for seizing the chance after being preferred to regular No 1 goalkeeper Andre Onana.

“It’s a big moment for him, the first penalty and another save here and we are really happy for him. It’s tough to be second goalkeeper, he came here to play, whenever he gets his chance he’s top class for us, he’s top class in training, he’s always available for everyone and he truly deserves this moment,” Fernandes said.

“I know we want to celebrate and everything but our focus is now Southampton, that is when we have to back it up. The big games against Liverpool, Arsenal, everyone steps up because it’s a big game. You want to be in these kinds of games, you want to be involved, you want to be the best but we have to do it in Old Trafford with these fans again. We have to give it back for the club. We need to do it every week, every game.”
