Harry Maguire has reacted on social media after Manchester United battled past Arsenal in the FA Cup third round on Sunday.

Maguire was part of a defensive effort which saw the Reds hold out for more than an hour to force spot-kicks after Diogo Dalot's sending-off. United were also indebted to Altay Bayindir but held firm before emerging victorious on penalties to keep their cup defence alive.

And Maguire has now had his say on the victory. "Sunday afternoons in the FA Cup." he simply said on Instagram alongside a picture of him in action against the Gunners.

The centre-back was left furious in the second-half when referee Andy Madley controversially awarded a spot-kick after he was adjudged to have fouled Kai Havertz. Martin Odegaard missed the resulting penalty with the Reds posting the word "justice," post-match on X.

Former Premier League referee Keith Hackett has now criticised Madley's decision in his latest column for the Telegraph.

“With Arsenal now surging forward in search of a winner, Kai Havertz collects Raheem Sterling’s pass inside the penalty area and attempts to dribble past Harry Maguire," he said.

"The German hits the turf as Maguire leans across to make the challenge. The only real contact, though, appears to be from Maguire’s arm on Havertz’s chest. The penalty is given and the United defender cannot believe it, throwing his hands to his head in shock.

The penalty kick is a poor decision by Madley. Not only has he made the wrong decision to penalise Maguire, but Havertz should have received a yellow card for an act of simulation.

The FA Cup third round has no VAR available, but I suggest had there been VAR in operation, Madley would have been instructed to visit the monitor and encouraged to overturn his decision.”

The Reds will host Leicester City next in the fourth round, with former interim boss and ex-United striker Ruud van Nistelrooy returning to Old Trafford as manager of the Foxes.
