Harvey Elliott left fuming as Federico Chiesa avoids bizarre Liverpool injury setback
Liverpool suffered only their third defeat of the season when a much-changed team were beaten at PSV Eindhoven in their final Champions League first stage match on Wednesday evening. A Cody Gakpo penalty and Harvey Elliott strike twice put the Reds ahead only for them to ultimately fall to a 3-2 loss in Holland.
Despite the result, Arne Slot's side finished top of the Champions League opening stage and will now face one of Paris Saint-Germain, Benfica, Monaco or Brest in the round of 16 in March.
But there was plenty that went unnoticed or under the radar during the 90 minutes at the Philips Stadion...

Slot error
Arne Slot cheerily admitted beforehand that this was a game where he wasn't particularly bothered about the outcome. And there was a sign the Liverpool boss wasn't totally concentrating on events.
Shortly before half-time, Slot erroneously believed the whistle had gone for the interval and was preparing to return to the dressing room when the game continued and Ricardo Pepi notched PSV's third goal.
Mind you, the Reds boss was paying more attention than UEFA. They initially credited the winner to Liverpool skipper-for-the-night Andy Robertson.
Harvey unhappy
Cody Gakpo may not have overly celebrated scoring against his former club. But there was one Liverpool player who was positively fuming at the strike.
After Federico Chiesa had been felled, the ball dropped to Harvey Elliott who struck into the corner of the net only to have the goal chalked off with the spot kick having already been awarded.
Cue a visibly agitated Elliott. That said, he didn't have to wait long until getting on the scoresheet and register for the second successive Champions League game.
Chiesa fortunate
With a hand in both Liverpool goals, another few penalty shouts and a first 90 minutes for the club, Chiesa certainly had an eventful evening. And having taken a knock when earning the spot kick, the Italian almost picked up a more unusual injury.
Challenging for the ball near the touchline during the second half, Chiesa was bundled off the field by PSV defender Rick Karsdorp, almost taking out a cameraman and young Liverpool substitute Trent Kone-Doherty.
Given the striker's poor luck with fitness and injuries, that he avoided any serious blow in the incident could be represented as a change of fortune.
Hungry Tobias
Teenage Liverpool defender Amara Nallo, sent off four minutes into his senior debut, has the rest of his career to ensure his claim to fame isn’t being the answer to a quiz question. And there was a surprise reminder of his late indiscretion on Thursday morning.
As the ECHO sat having breakfast in their Eindhoven hotel, in walked German referee Tobias Stieler and his fellow officials from the game, who had evidently all been staying at the establishment during their time in Holland.
Rumours we obstructed the referee while he was queuing at the buffet for his scrambled eggs have just been made up.
