Harvey Elliott opens up on talks with Arne Slot with hint over Liverpool future
Harvey Elliott has admitted he's been frustrated by his lack of game time at Liverpool, but he has vowed to keep banging on Arne Slot's door after a dazzling display against Brentford.
Elliott hasn't played as much as he had hoped since recovering from a broken foot in Nov. However, the 21-year-old took his chance on Saturday after coming off the substitutes bench to break Brentford's resolve, playing a part in both of Darwin Nunez's goals in added time.
His cameo in the 2-0 victory came after holding friendly conversations in the head coach's office, as Elliott looks to improve his input on Liverpool's Premier League, Champions League, and domestic cup charges. “We've had those conversations, but it's not just me,” Elliott said.

“There are other lads in the team who maybe haven't played as much as they want and are probably doing the same thing. I just have to keep working hard, keep trying to help the team out whenever I'm needed and just wait for my opportunity. I don't expect to come in and play straight away. I want to help my team out as much as I can and the club and give everything I can.”
Giving a clear response to recent transfer speculation, Elliott told the ECHO: "Absolutely [I want to stay]. Liverpool is my club, Liverpool is my team. I want to fight for my place, fight for my position in the team. I am going to do what it takes. Do it as much as I can.
"Help the team out when it’s possible. It’s down to me to put in the effort, the hard work, the desire, to make that achievement. I am not going to give up, I am going to keep fighting and who knows what might happen."
The boyhood Red has already identified where he needs to improve to break into Liverpool's starting XI. He added: "If you look at the team now, the sprints we're doing and constant running around is something I can do but I can improve it a little more.
"We have players in the team who are unbelievable at it. Dom, Curtis, people like that, are constantly pressing and running around. It's something I can do but I need to get into the rhythm of doing it and making it effective, not just doing it for the sake of it. I need to improve on it and I'll work as hard as I can on it.”
Following Arsenal's 2-2 draw at home to Aston Villa, Liverpool's three points on the road at the Bees have strengthened their grip on the top spot in the Premier League. The Reds boast a six-point advantage over the Gunners while also holding a game in hand, which could extend their lead to nine.
Slot has been left impressed by Elliott's mentality. The Dutchman made sure to shine the spotlight on the midfielder following the win. “In all the other interviews there was a lot of focus on Darwin, because he scored two goals, and every time I said ‘yeah, but don’t forget Harvey’,” Slot told reporters.
"He had a big impact on both goals as well. It’s so nice for me, for us as a team, that I have players that can impact the game on the bench as well. This happened at Forest with Jota and Kostas and today with Harvey and with Darwin.
"I also liked Robbo and Curtis when they came in, and Federico was only for five minutes but it’s nice to have so many opportunities on the bench as well. That’s why they have to stay available, they have to stay fit, because one of the strengths of the team is also players who can impact the game from the bench.”
