The headteacher at a Rossendale secondary school has spoken of the “immense pride” the school feels following ex-pupil and England footballer Kiera Walsh breaking the British record transfer fee.

Kiera Walsh, who studied at Bacup and Rawtenstall Grammar School, is set to complete her move to Chelsea, which officials at her former club Barcelona is worth up to £800,000.

Having already broken the world record transfer fee, when leaving Manchester City for Catalonia, this move will be the most expensive in British women's football and means she is two of the top five most expensive transfers in the sport.

James Johnstone, principal at Bacup and Rawtenstall Grammar School (BRGS), said: “We are absolutely delighted and incredibly proud to hear that Keira Walsh, a former student at BRGS, has signed with Chelsea for a British record transfer fee.

“This is not only a landmark moment in her career but also for the sport as a whole.

“From her time at BRGS, Keira has always stood out as a remarkable talent and an inspirational role model for others.

“Her journey from attending school in Rossendale to winning the European Championship with England and the Champions League with Barcelona is one that will resonate deeply with our current and future students.

“Keira’s success on the global stage is a testament to the power of dedication, hard work, passion, and a reflection of her commitment to excellence.

“As she begins this exciting new chapter, we are certain that she will continue to motivate countless young athletes to pursue their dreams.

“Keira’s story is a source of immense pride for all of us, and we are excited to continue supporting the next generation of talented sports stars here at BRGS.

“We wish her continued success with Chelsea and England, and look forward to celebrating her future accomplishments.”

The 27-year-old, who learnt her trade at Blackburn Rovers, was an integral part of the Lionesses European Championship side in 2022 and the team that reached the World Cup Final in 2023, alongside fellow Rovers graduates Ella Toone and Georgia Stanway

Collecting 80 caps for the team, the holding midfielder is considered one of the best players in the world.

She has won back-to-back league titles and Champions Leagues with Barcelona after helping Man City to the WSL title in 2016.

Keira completed her studies at Bacup and Rawtenstall Grammar School in their sixth form, having previously gone to Haslingden High School.

Mr Johnstone added: “At BRGS, we aim to instil high aspirations and an ambition to achieve in all our students, and are committed to nurturing young sporting talent.

“We provide our students with access to outstanding sports facilities, expert coaching, and the opportunity to develop both as athletes and individuals.

“Seeing one of our own going from strength to strength in the world of football is both an honour and a reminder of the incredible potential within our school community.”

Negotiations for the player were concluded on Thursday morning, January 30, and she joins American Naomi Girma at the club – who joined from the San Diego Wave for over £880,000.
