Liverpool fans would no doubt have been hoping for better news when Mohamed Salah was given the chance to provide another update on his future.

Having been named man of the match against West Ham, the Egyptian was obliged to speak to Sky Sports, and there was always one question guaranteed to be asked. With rumors swirling of a new three-year deal, perhaps Salah’s interview on this occasion would be a bit more positive than when he spoke to reporters outside Southampton last month.

No such luck though. The rumors proved to be just that, with Salah making clear that Liverpool still has work to do if they’re to hold on to their talisman.

"No, we're far away from that (giving some good news on his future)," Salah said. "I don't want to put something in the media and people start saying stuff, but nothing has moved and now we're focused on the team."

That focus clearly isn’t being broken. Salah has been in simply sublime form this season, having bagged 20 goals and 17 assists in 26 appearances across all competitions. Whether he stays or goes at the end of the campaign, he wants it to be one to remember.

"The only thing in my mind is I want Liverpool to win the league and I want to be a part of that,” he added. “That's the only thing I think about this season.

“I will do my best for the team to win the trophy, we're going in the right direction, but there are a few other teams trying to catch us and they're very good teams. We have to stay focused, humble, work hard and go again."

The Reds are of course well placed to go on and win the league. Regardless of Arsenal’s result at Brentford on New Year’s Day, they’ll take at least a six-point lead into their next game against Manchester United - the halfway point of the season.

Few would have anticipated being in such a strong position just a few months ago, which is testament to the job Arne Slot has done since taking over from Jurgen Klopp. There is, though, still a long way to go - and the Liverpool boss might need some help from higher up.

With January now less than 24 hours away, much of FSG’s focus will be on tying down Salah, Virgil van Dijk and Trent Alexander-Arnold to new deals, but they also need to be alert to the opportunity to bolster this title push during the transfer window.

The way things are going at the moment, you would be hesitant to make any new signings and interrupt the momentum the Reds have built. If there is one thing that could do even more damage though, it’s injuries.

Joe Gomez is the latest name on the list of casualties after limping off against West Ham. Granted, it’s not a long list now, but there are more defenders on there than Slot would like.

Hopefully Ibrahima Konate won’t be too far away from making a return, but Liverpool now finds itself one injury away from having to promote one of the club’s youngsters to the heart of the defense, or find a makeshift solution from the likes of Ryan Gravenberch or Wataru Endo.

If Liverpool is to do what Salah is hoping for and win the title, then it needs to be looking at signing a new center-back. With Gomez looking at a long spell on the sidelines, relying on Konate - who has had more than his fair share of injuries over the years - and Jarell Quansah - who has been short of confidence and minutes this season - alongside Virgil van Dijk would be a big risk.

And maybe Salah wants to see Liverpool showing some ambition in that manner. If FSG is serious about winning the title, and maybe even keeping Salah, then it needs to dip into the piggy bank and get a new defender on board.
