Former Manchester United striker Teddy Sheringham believes Marcus Rashford would have been "booted out the door" had he declared interest in a challenge elsewhere during Sir Alex Ferguson's tenure.

In an interview with journalist Henry Winter last month, Rashford declared he was "ready for a new challenge", just two days after being left out of the squad for the Manchester derby victory over City at the Etihad Stadium.

The England international has not played for the club since, making the bench on only one occasion. He was left out of the squad for Sunday's FA Cup triumph over Arsenal despite head coach Ruben Amorim confirming he had overcome the illness-related issue that forced him to miss the draw with Liverpool a week earlier.

A cluster of clubs are being linked with the possibility of taking Rashford on loan before the end of the January transfer window, including the likes of AC Milan and West Ham United. And in the opinion of former Reds striker Sheringham, Ferguson would have long since sent him packing had he still been in charge.

Asked which club Rashford should join to reignite his career, Sheringham, speaking to OLBG, said: "I don't know and I don't care, really. I think the way he's come out and said that 'he's ready for a new challenge' is beyond me.

"You used to get foreigners coming into England saying that sort of thing and people think, 'yeah, okay'. However, when it's one of your own from Manchester; a Manchester boy that should understand the privilege it is to play for Manchester United and where you're at when you're playing for Manchester United.

"Every player in the world growing up still wants to play for Manchester United and he's saying now that he wants a new challenge somewhere. I don't understand it.

"Fergie would've booted him out the door by now if he'd have said that while he was in his tenure. He's obviously going to go somewhere, but I think his days are numbered at Man United."
