Dean Saunders has bizarrely claimed that Liverpool should sign Kyle Walker as a replacement for Trent Alexander-Arnold. The Reds vice-captain remains out of contract at the end of the season, with his future the subject of ongoing speculation as a result.

Real Madrid are interested in signing the England international on a Bosman transfer, while they also had an approach rejected by Liverpool on the eve of the January transfer window. However, the 26-year-old is now free to agree a pre-contract agreement with overseas clubs.

While Alexander-Arnold’s future is uncertain, his international team-mate’s own next moves are rather more clear. Pep Guardiola confirmed last weekend that Walker had told the club he wants to leave in January.

The 34-year-old has made 18 appearances for City so far this season, but has struggled for form with the reigning champions well off the pace in the Premier League title-race.

But that has not stopped former Liverpool striker Saunders from suggesting that his old club should sign the Man City captain as a replacement for Alexander-Arnold.

"Do you want me to chuck a spanner in the works?” he said on TalkSPORT. "So it looks like Trent is leaving, why don't Liverpool sign him (Walker)?

"There you go, he'd be a good signing for Liverpool if Trent goes. I know they've got the young kid [Conor Bradley] coming through... By the way, he's still quick - and if Trent is leaving.

"He'd get in Spurs' team, he'd get in Liverpool's team. He'd get in Man United's team, he'd get in Chelsea's team.

"Would he get in Arsenal's team? He'd get in Arsenal's team. He's better than [Ben] White!"

Walker has made 319 appearances for City since joining the club from Tottenham Hotspur in a £50m switch back in July 2017.

During his time at the Etihad, he has won six Premier League titles, the Champions League, two FA Cups, four League Cups, the FIFA Club World Cup and the European Super Cup.

But after struggling in England’s Euro 2024 final defeat to Spain back in the summer, he has struggled considerably at club level. City have won just one of the 10 Premier League and Champions League matches Walker has started this season.

The England international is expected to complete a transfer abroad if he does leave Man City this month.
