Head coach Michael Duff has challenged Herbie Kane to add more goals to his game after his match-winning strike at Wycombe Wanderers.

The midfielder's stunning first half volley ensured Huddersfield Town left Adams Park with maximum points. Duff said: “The one thing he [Kane] hasn’t done, he hasn’t got many goals or assists to his name. His performances have been good and he looks fit. He’s got that in him. It’s one of the reasons why we did bring him in is to add a creative spark.

"It was a really good finish. Hopefully there is many more of them to come. He worked really hard. I’ve said to all of them hard work pays you back in life as much as anything.”

Victory at Wycombe stretched the Terriers' unbeaten run to 15 matches and moved them to within four points of the League One automatic promotion places. It was a dogged, hard-working away performance.

“That’s what a Huddersfield fan would want to see from their team," said Duff. "They want to see good football, I understand that. But non negotiables are endeavour, fight, giving everything for the badge and the players were excellent at that.

“We scored a really good goal and then showed resilience and determination to fight for the three points which we ended up getting. The performance wasn’t great but it’s a really difficult pitch. There wasn’t a lot of football played by either team to be honest and we found a way to win against a team at the top of the league.

“That’s been the biggest shift (the mentality). I talked a lot about it before and people probably got bored of it but it’s true. When we found a bit of heat or a bit of adversity we’ve turned into a team of individuals (in the past). The amount of adversity this group has had in the last two or three weeks has been unbelievable in terms of injuries, illness. I was expecting the bus driver to get ill or break down or something because it’s just been one thing after the other.

“It just goes to show it’s about the team. It’s not about individuals. Everyone has won. All the supporters have won, the chairman will be happy, the players are happy, we are happy and you’re in the stage of the season where it’s game, game, game. Its hard to prepare.

“We didn’t even debrief the game from the other day. I think we’ve deserved to win the last two home games but we haven’t so you can feel sorry for yourselves and start looking around ‘they’re winning’. Just focus on ourselves and try and win the next one.

“The shape and framework of the team has looked really good in terms of I think it’s 18 or 19 goals conceded in 24 games and if you think 3 of them were against Northampton. So that part of it has looked good. We are finding ways. We didn’t have 50 odd shots but we have found a way (to win).

“It’s important that you just keep reminding ourselves and a reality check that we are not Man City yet. We are not free flowing and playing out from the back every time. It’s a relentless league. The run Wycombe have been on, I am not sure how many games they have lost in the last three or four months but it’s not many. Possibly one. I think they won 11 on the spin at one point. Matt Bloomfield has done a brilliant job.

“It almost felt like a home game. All you could hear was our supporters, particularly in the last 20 minutes. It was really pleasing to go over and thank them (at the end). They saw the team winning and the players giving them everything. I thought there was lots of them (fans) and they made lots of noise and it’s all you can ask for. I’ve said it all along. Their job is to support the team and then at the end of the game clap them or boo.”
