A HEREFORD squash player battled along with an ankle injury to finish second in a regional tournament.

Tom Burton, of Hereford Squash Tennis and Racketball Centre, travelled to Ipswich to compete in the East of England Squash Masters over 65 competition.

Burton was seeded fifth in the tournament and had a tough draw.

In the first round he won 3-0 against David Kirk (Oxfordshire) and he then went on to beat Nick Gollaglee, the current British and Irish Open champion, 3-1.

The semi-final turned into a cliffhanger against Gordon McManus (Kent) as Burton again prevailed 3-2,15-13 in the final game.

Burton was carrying an ankle injury into the tournament and three hard matches took its toll.

He was unable to continue when at 1-1 in the final against Richard Millman (Norfolk). This was Millman's fifth regional title, having returned from coaching in the USA.
