'He's a brilliant player, a great lad' - Linnets boss on classy midfielder
Necessity is the mother of invention – and at a footballing level, Josh Hmami is a proven example.
The polished midfielder arrived at King's Lynn Town from Southport last summer and quickly looked a class act. Goals were elusive in his first 10 league games, but, given what he provided in the middle of the park, no one was complaining.
But then, King's Lynn Town manager Adam Lakeland found himself in a bit of a quandary when Buxton headed this way in October: Jonny Margetts was injured and out for weeks, and Gold Omotayo was out of sorts. Hmami was pushed forward – and Lakeland had the answer.
“Every time he's played up there he's played well,” said the Linnets boss after last weekend’s 3-1 home win over Marine, when Hmami put the icing on the cake with an injury-time third.
“It was something that we did experimentally, initially, the first time we did it, against Buxton here – he scored, we won. And he played up there against Oxford City on the Tuesday night - he scored we won. He played up there last week with Gold in a two – we didn't score, but we won and obviously he's played up there again today and he scored and we won – and he set one up for Tommy (Hughes).
“He's a brilliant player, a great lad. I still think there's more to come from him, so I will keep pushing him, because that's my job.
“But his work rate for his team regardless of where you ask him to play is outstanding and to a man today every single person worked so hard, the lads who come off the bench, but that's what I expect, that's what they're paid for and if we keep on doing that, we'll keep on winning games.”
Lakeland will be without Margetts and Omotayo at Peterborough Sports on Saturday because of injury, but Hughes, Fin Barnes and Ross Crane are all a good support crew to Hmami.
Midweek result dropped Lynn to fourth, just a point behind leaders Kidderminster, while their hosts – jointly managed by one-time Linnet Michael Gash – are 14th.
The Turbines’ form is better away from Lincoln Road, but they’ve lost just once in their last 12 games, at home to Scunthorpe on Boxing Day. Lakeland – who hasn’t beaten them ion three attempts as Lynn boss - watched them draw 0-0 at Chorley 10 days ago
“Peterborough Sports are a very good team,” he said. “They're very difficult team to play against, very physical, they've got pace in the team, they've got a lot of experience. It’s not an easy place to go.
“We watched them on Tuesday night at Chorley where they were very deserving of a point. And we know that Saturday will be a really difficult game where we're going to be tested and where it's going to be tough. It's probably not going to be pleasing on the eye, but we've got to find a way to go there and try and get a result.”
