ADAM HINSHELWOOD is beginning to consider how his York City squad will shape up for the rest of the season.

With the January transfer window opening in the Football League, there has been a lot of movement so far with clubs beginning to add to their squad, as well as balance the numbers.

The Football League January window doesn’t directly affect York, with the National League transfer window being open practically all season round, but it hasn’t stopped Hinshelwood from making changes to his squad.

The addition of Josh Stones from Wigan Athletic added to the permanent acquisition of Malachi Fagan-Walcott from Cardiff City on Christmas Eve, with centre-back Darragh O'Connor also departing York and the extension of loan deals for players currently plying their trade away from the club.

It’s something that Hinshelwood is constantly considering, with the City boss set to hold a meeting with co-owners Matt Uggla and Julie-Anne Uggla, as well as Director of Football Tony McMahon, on how his squad will shape up in the coming weeks.

As a part of those decisions, Hinshelwood will consider the future of winger David Ajiboye, whose loan move is close to expiring.

“We’re constantly looking at it,” Hinshelwood explained, “the owner of the club Matt has come back in and Julie-Anne, they’re back so we’ll definitely sit down, have a meeting and see what the squad looks like.

“We had a brief one the other day, Tony McMahon has been ill so when he’s back we will sit down and see what the squad looks like in-depth.

“I think it’s in a good place, we’ve got David Ajiboye’s loan coming to an end pretty soon so we’ll look at what that looks like.

“We’ll have a good chat with him and see where he’s at with it, his contract is up at Peterborough at the end of the season so we’ll have a look at that.

“We don’t want to take someone if they’re not going to add to the squad.

“It’s important that we keep players playing and getting minutes, so the likes of Thierry [Latty-Fairweather] and Olly Dyson can get their loans extended, which we think is important.

“Crookesy [Adam Crookes] will be available next week, we’ve got Cam John back, we’ve got Jeff King as well, and Ricky [Aguiar] that has been playing in the backline. Joe Felix can play right-back, left-back, so there are some options.”

January also saw Luca Thomas’ loan deal with York come to an end, with Hinshelwood initially being hopeful of extending the Leeds United youngster’s stay with City.

“Again, it’s one to look at. The games come thick and fast and he missed a little bit of training last week due to illness, which was a bit of a shame.

“We didn’t properly get to say goodbye to Luca, who is a player that we like.

“Again, he’s a 20-year-old lad who needs to be playing games, if we can’t offer that regular game time and especially with Josh coming in, then it’s something we’ve got to look at as well.

“He’s a top guy, a top player and definitely one that we keep a close eye on.”
