Hinshelwood credits team togetherness as City right the wrongs in Oldham win
ADAM HINSHELWOOD credited the performance and efforts of his York City players to right the wrongs of Saturday.
After suffering a 2-1 victory to Sutton United at the LNER Community Stadium on Saturday, a frustrated Hinshelwood demanded a reaction from his players for their trip to play-off occupiers Oldham Athletic.
He was given just that, with York storming to a hugely impressive 2-0 win over Oldham, thanks to first-half strikes from Malachi Fagan-Walcott and Ollie Pearce.
It was the defensive side of the performance that delighted Hinshelwood, who was pleased to nullify the ‘firepower’ of Oldham, whilst also crediting the spirit shown by his squad.
“Everything that we didn’t do on Saturday, I think we produced today,” A delighted Hinshelwood enthused.
“Full credit to the players, they do it time and time again when there’s a bit of doubt chucked their way or a bit of criticism.
“Rightly so, because we were poor, but they responded excellently.
“In both sides of the game I thought that we was braver to play and some of our passing was excellent in the first-half, then we dug in and changed shape in the second-half and I thought that we defended our box with a real passion.
“That’s what I’ve seen for the majority of the season and that’s the standard that we’ve now got to get in training and day to day.
“With the firepower they’ve got, and I know they’ve lost one or two, the firepower they’ve still got enough firepower up there.
“It was just one save for Harrison [Male], and what a save that was, it was unbelievable and I thought that it was in.
“He’s reacted brilliantly to keep a clean sheet.
“Every time it’s came in the box, I thought that Callum Howe, Malachi, Len [Lenell John-Lewis] when he went back there, Cam John and even Joe Felix, some of the best bits of defending was when he was using his body and kept getting pulled up for it.
“It was an unbelievable performance but I’ve got to mention the whole squad, when Ricky [Aguiar] and Billy [Chadwick] came on we got control back in the game.
“I say to the players all of the time that it’s going to be the whole squad that’s needed, and they’ve seen us over the line by their quality on the ball, their hard work pressing.
“I’m really pleased that them two came on and contributed so effectively like they did.
“It was a real good team performance, I don’t think on Saturday that we could have picked one player that was good and there wasn’t one player that was bad today.”
Hinshelwood has reiterated throughout the season how he will not allow the standards he’s set to drop, despite those expectations not being met in back-to-back defeats to Gainsborough Trinity and then Sutton.
The City boss was therefore delighted to see the standards being raised again, with Hinshelwood hoping that that level of performance can be met every match.
“They’ve done it all season so when you see them fall below those standards, I’ll be the first one to be on their case.
“Whether that’s in training or in games like they did on Saturday, because they set such a high standard and I just can’t praise them enough for the attitude they’ve shown to come here.
“The aggression that they have played with and also, they played some really good football.
“We’ve got to do both sides of that.
“We came away from home and didn’t create bundles ourselves, but we were clinical and got the job done in the first-half.
“The game is then a bit different and it’s about us being really together in our shape behind the ball, the two midfield players came on and changed it with their quality to get on the ball and their pressing.”
