Hinshelwood expecting City reaction ahead of Stones' reunion with Oldham
ADAM Hinshelwood wants to see a response from his York City players in their visit to Oldham Athletic tomorrow evening.
After a Will Davies brace meant that York collapsed to a 2-1 defeat against Sutton United on Saturday, City will be forced to quickly move on when travelling to Oldham Athletic on Tuesday night, after the game was initially postponed due to fog on Boxing Day.
With a bumper crowd expected at Boundary Park as well as over 1,000 travelling York supporters, Hinshelwood wants his players to embrace the opportunity of playing in front of what will hopefully be an incredible atmosphere.
However, for his players to do so, Hinshelwood hopes that the club’s playing style under his influence can be rediscovered, having felt as if it faded at times against Sutton on Saturday.
“You’ve got to be [excited], what better game to bounce back from and show people that we’re better than what we showed,” Hinshelwood enthused.
“That’s what football is all about, we’re not always going to get it right and I don’t think I’ve come and said in a press conference that I’m really confident about today’s game and that we’re going to wipe the floor with anyone, because I know what this league is all about.
“That would be extremely naïve to think about that.

“Results like Saturday are possible if we don’t, for whatever reason, turn up and show the right mindset to a game, that’s what can happen and what we try to avoid all of the time.
“There’s no better way in my opinion to bounce back, it’s a big game, there’s no hiding that, and both teams are really well supported.
“Both are doing well in the league table so it’s one to embrace and enjoy.
“I said to the players that I’d much prefer to be at this end of the table and competing, than what we was in and what we was scrapping for last season.
“This should be enjoyed, these kind of occasions and these games.
“I think that the performance is more important for me, I want to see us play our style and our tempo and match their aggression.
“They’re going to be well up for the game and simply we need to match that, I don’t think we matched that on Saturday, we were a bit too much of an easy team to play against.
“We haven’t seen that too many times this season, so we need to get back to being a tough team to play against.
“If we get that, then I will be pleased, we know it’s a tough game but I just want us to get back to performing how we perform.
“In the last 21 games, if we perform at our best, then I know we’ll get results and those performances will turn into results.
“I just want to see a bit more of a reflection of what we’re about.”
Oldham themselves are in need of a win after three games without a victory, which has seen Micky Mellon’s side fall 11 points adrift of the single automatic promotion spot.
A win against City would positively impact their ambitions to return to the Football League, with Hinshelwood discussing the aspects a match brings when two teams are vying for a response tackle one another.
The York manager continued: “They’ll obviously be looking to respond from their home defeat and we’ll be looking to try and do the same.
“It has all the makings of a real good game, it’ll be a high intensity and they’ll come after us at their place, trying to press us high up the pitch.
“It’ll be a different sort of challenge to maybe find the right pass and be a patient with the ball, it’ll be a bit of a different encounter.
“We’ve got to be ready for that test, there’ll be no excuses from our end, we’ll be ready for it.
“These are the games that you want to play in, this is why the players have come to York City and this is why I’m here, to be at a big club and play in big games like this.”
Another interesting dynamic for the upcoming clash over the Pennines is the return of Josh Stones to his former club, after the striker made the switch to York, following his recall to Wigan Athletic from a loan with Oldham.
Stones was highly-regarded by his former employers, and with the atmosphere expected to be potentially distracting on Tuesday, Hinshelwood opted to have a chat with his newest addition to ensure that the 21-year-old’s head was in the correct space of mind.
“I thought that was probably a case of Josh’s performance at the weekend, he was probably trying a little bit too hard to show what he’s about and get everyone onside.
“I much prefer players to be that way and it shows a lot of about his character, he’s a great character and a great lad.
“He does want to do well and impress, but I thought he was a bit too eager at times and I just want him to relax and enjoy his game.
“We’ve had that conversation and what that might look like for him.
“He’s ready to go, he’s a good lad and it’s a game he will definitely relish. He’s a York City player now and wants to be on the right side of results for us now.”
