Ian Holloway has lamented Swindon Town's abject away form and is hoping his side can turn a corner as they head to Newport on Friday night.

Town have not won a league game away from home since October but will fancy their chances at Rodney Parade against struggling opposition.

Holloway's side have lost just once in their last seven league games and currently sit eight points clear of the relegation zone in 19th.

Their opponents Newport County have lost four in a row and are two points behind The Robins in 20th, making Friday's game a perfect opportunity for Town to both snap their away game streak and distance themselves further from the relegation scrap.

Speaking to BBC Radio Wiltshire, Holloway labelled his side's form away from the Nigel Eady County Ground as "disgusting."

He said: "We haven't won away from home, my record with this club away from home is disgusting, I think I've got 2 points from 21.

"It's absolutely disgusting, I'm not happy with it and I'll be telling them that.

"There's no excuse, I do not understand, we need to start picking up away points and hopefully we can start on Friday, whatever Newport do we need to apply ourselves in the way that we have been doing and try and hurt their back four."

The Robins are winless in their last eight away league games, drawing three, losing five and conceding 16 across that time.

However, Holloway was buoyed by the effort shown in Saturday's 2-0 win over Barrow and is confident the team are moving in the right direction despite the room for improvement.

"It's all about getting that balance, we're nowhere near where I want us to be but I'm enjoying the effort the lads are giving me and I think we will apply that effort on Friday.

"Can we start an away run now, we've got a home run going, if we do we can be seriously pleased with ourselves, but right now I'm devastated with how bad we are away from home, it is totally unacceptable."

"I'm hoping we continue our progress by making decisions that put their team under pressure rather than our team under pressure, and I think my team are starting to do that.

"Sometimes we make the wrong decision where we should have played it and didn't and I'm not happy with that, but I want to produce a style of football that I'd pay to watch myself.

"What pleased me most about Saturday's game was that it was the ugliest game in the world, they picked their strongest, biggest team and played back to front as they thought that was our weakness, but we won every header and when they took their centre forwards off my defence dealt with it, so I was absolutely delighted."

Town thrashed Newport 4-0 in the reverse fixture at the County Ground in September and will be eager for a repeat result, but have won just one of their last eight league trips to Newport.

Holloway has said he expects his bench to be bolstered by the arrival of a new forward on Thursday, although did not reveal the identity of the latest addition to his squad.

Swindon travel to Rodney Parade on Friday to face Newport County in League Two. Kick-off is at 7.45pm.
