Horse Power: Bo Zenith can win the Imperial Cup at Sandown
BO ZENITH can secure victory in the Betfair Imperial Cup Handicap Hurdle (GBB Race) (2.25pm) at Sandown Park on Saturday afternoon. And with it set up a crack at the £100,000 for also triumphing at next week's Cheltenham Festival.
Formerly trained by Gary Moore, the six-year-old can land a first victory since switching to Nicky Henderson’s Seven Barrows stable in the feature at the Esher track. Bo Zenith also holds entries in Coral Cup and the Martin Pipe Conditional Jockeys’ Handicap Hurdle at the Prestbury Park extravaganza next week so victory can set up a bonus bid.
Bo Zenith was a smart juvenile hurdler when with the Moore stable a couple of years ago. He won the Victor Ludorum Juvenile Hurdle at Haydock Park and a similar contest at Stratford in March 2023 before pitched into Grade One company. He ran a fine race and was only beaten a short-head by Willie Mullins’ smart Zenta in the Jewson Anniversary 4-Y-O Juvenile Hurdle at the Randox Grand National Festival at Aintree Racecourse the following month. He wasn’t seen on the track after that for 18 months and was switched to the Henderson stable, where he made an eye-catching debut when running on well to finish third to Mirabad and Wreckless Eric at Cheltenham in December over 2m1f.
And although he didn’t quite go on from that run, when only fifth to Altobelli over 2m3½f at Ascot in January, he remains progressive back down to two miles here. On his earlier juvenile form – particularly that Aintree run, he looks well handicapped and he may be able to strike for Henderson before heading to Prestbury Park next week.
As ever the Imperial Cup is one of the most competitive two-mile handicap hurdles around and there are plenty in with a chance of victory. Last year’s winner Go Dante – from the Olly Murphy stable – will go well again off a lower handicap mark than his success 12 months ago. While Big Ginge – owned by Liverpool-born John Neild and trained by Nigel Twiston-Davies – has been consistent without winning and could go close again. Others who could be a danger to Bo Zenith are Paul Nicholls’ Afadil and the Sam Thomas-trained Lump Sum.
ELYSIAN KNIGHT can win the European Breeders’ Fund Betfair “National Hunt” Novices’ Handicap Hurdle Final (Premier Handicap) (GBB Race) (1.50pm). Neil Mulholland's six-year-old won his second start over hurdles at massive odds of 40-1 at Ffos Las in January and looks just the progressive type who have taken this race in the past. Elysian Knight couldn’t back that win up at Fakenham last month, but he wasn’t beaten far when third to reopposing Aviation. He can turn the tables on that rival on revised terms to triumph.
MELON can continue his progress with victory in the Betfair Racing Podcasts Juvenile Handicap Hurdle (GBB Race) (1.15pm). The four-year-old, from the Cheshire stable of Oliver Greenall and Josh Guerriero, was a winner on the Flat at Haydock last September and had taken to hurdling well this season. He has won twice from three starts, scoring on his debut over obstacles at Doncaster in December, before putting a misstep at Chepstow over Christmas behind him to return to winning ways at Wetherby in January. He looks a decent prospect and can make it three wins from four starts before potentially stepping up in grade, maybe at the Grand National Festival at Aintree next month.

HOE JOLY SMOKE can bounce back from his defeat at Newbury over Christmas to win the Best Odds On The Betfair Exchange Handicap Chase (Challenger Staying Chase Series Qualifier) (GBB Race) (3.35pm). Dan Skelton’s seven-year-old had looked good when – having been second on his chasing debut at Uttoxeter in October – got off the mark over the bigger obstacles when scoring in impressive fashion over this course and distance in December. Hoe Joly Smoke was sent off favourite at the end of December but was hugely disappointing when fifth well behind Henry’s Friend at Newbury. The vet reported that he had bled from the nose that day. But if he’s over that and returned to a course on which he performed so well, he can get back on track with another victory.
Paul Nicholls’ DON'T TELL SU can finally get off the mark for the season in the Betfair Exchange Novices’ Limited Handicap Chase (GBB Race) (4.10pm). The seven-year-old has not been out of the first three over hurdles in eight starts over the past two seasons. But he has only won once at Wincanton around the same time as this last year. That was over two miles, but he has recently been running over similarly longer distances as this 2m4f. He was runner-up at Sandown and Warwick and third at Uttoxeter last time. He may be able to finally get his head back in front.
ROSES ALL THE WAY can land a first victory in the Listed British Stallion Studs EBF Mares’ Standard Open National Hunt Flat Race (GBB Race) (3pm). The six-year-old, from the Cheshire stable of Merseyside-born, Grand National-winning trainer Donald McCain Junior, has run well enough in three bumpers so far – finishing runner-up at both Carlisle and Huntingdon at the end of last year, before coming home third behind Strong Run at Warwick last month. This looks a chance for a first victory Under Rules before the Workforce mare goes over obstacles.
Joe Tizzard’s TRIPLE TRADE – a back-to-form second at Kempton at the start of last month – can land a first victory in 14 months in the finale at Sandown, the Betting.Betfair.com Handicap Chase (GBB Race) (4.45pm).
At Ayr HERITIER can win the Virgin Bet Daily Extra Places Handicap Chase (Go North One Man Series Qualifier) (GBB Race) (2.17pm). Lizzie Quinlan’s eight-year-old has been mixing hurdling and chasing over the past few seasons and although he hasn’t won over the bigger obstacles since November 2022, he is now down to the same handicap mark and may be able to get his head in front again.
Mark Walford’s JUST CALL ME LUCY can take the Livescore Bet mares’ Handicap Hurdle (Go North Lady Buttons Series Qualifier) (For The Ayrshire Yeom (2.50pm). While others who can score up in Scotland are Iain Jardine’s hat-trick-seeking BASHFUL in the Livescore Bet Best Odds Daily Handicap Hurdle (For The Craigie Cup) (Go North Sea Pigeon Series Qualifier (3.25pm); the unbeaten Lucinda Russell-trained JUPITER DES MOTTES in the Virgin Bet Novices’ Hurdle (GBB Race) (1.42pm); and NED TANNER – from the Nick Alexander stable – in the Virgin Bet Cheltenham Festival Money Back Handicap Chase (GBB Race) (4pm).
At Hereford the Tizzard-trained duo DIAMOND DAYS and WESTERN GENERAL can win the DragonBet Born From The Betting Ring Novices’ Limited Handicap Hurdle (3.10pm) and the DragonBet Backing Our Opinion At Cheltenham Handicap Chase (GBB Race) (2.05pm) respectively. While course and distance scorer LANGLEY HUNDRED – from the Philip Hobbs and Jonson White stable – can win again in the Green Dragon Hotel Hereford Novices’ Handicap Chase (GBB Race) (3.45pm).
