Transfer Gossip: Chelsea set for £200m spending spree on Perisic, van Dijk and more, Man United 'ready to activate' Barcelona defender's release clause

If there was one positive to come from this weekend’s football for Antonio Conte, it’s that the Chelsea board may now believe him when he says he needs several more players to boost his squad. That, and the fact his hair still looks excellent.

And the Blues appear to be wasting little time trying to right the wrongs of Saturday’s 3-2 home defeat to Burnley. Not by teaching Gary Cahill how to tackle properly, but by launching a transfer raid for one of Manchester United’s top targets.

The Mirror says Conte is considering a late swoop for Ivan Perisic, who the Red Devils have been trying to sign all summer but have failed to agree a fee with his club Inter Milan.

Roman Abramovich could apparently be about to sanction a £48m move for the Croatian winger in an attempt make himself feel a bit better about losing Romelu Lukaku and Nemanja Matic to the Red Devils this summer. He is also considering treating himself to a pedicure for the same reason.

And he won’t stop there. The Express says Chelsea are poised to spend £30m on Arsenal’s Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain, £25m on Leicester’s Danny Drinkwater, another £25m on Valencia full-back Joao Cancelo and a further £50m on Southampton defender Virgil van Dijk. Although based on Saturday’s action it seems that Liverpool might need the Dutchman even more than the Blues do.

Man United eye fourth signing

Man Utd’s squad, on the hand, looks in fine fettle, but they are still trying to sign more players just in case they don’t face any more teams as rubbish as West Ham.

The Express says United are ready to match Barcelona full-back Sergi Roberto’s £36.5m release clause, while the Mail reports that the club are close to agreeing terms with 19-year-old Oliveirense forward Bruno Amorim. He is only 5ft 5in but apparently makes up for it “in speed and trickery”, and he’ll still probably win more headers than Chris Smalling.

Tottenham continue to threaten to spend some actual money, with Lazio’s Keita Balde the latest man linked with a possible switch to Wembley (Mirror). The 22-year-old forward has already attracted interest from Juventus and West Ham this summer. Unsurprisingly, he wants to join Juventus.

Meanwhile, Arsenal’s efforts to offload some deadwood have been given a boost by a fresh Newcastle approach for two of the Emirates’ forgotten men, Jack Wilshere and Lucas Perez (Mirror).

Elsewhere, Monaco’s players have been told that Kylian Mbappe will sign for Paris Saint-Germain (Foot Mercato), PSG forward Jese Rodriguez has worked out that his days at the Parc des Princes are numbered and wants to join Stoke (Sun) and Liverpool are vying with Newcastle to sign 17-year-old Hartlepool striker Connor Simpson, who has been described as the “new Andy Carroll” (Mirror). West Ham won’t be touching him with a barge pole then.
