Gossip: Lemar is 'top Arsenal target', Mahrez 'set for £35m PSG move', West Ham 'want Zabaleta and Batshauyi'

Everyone wants a Monaco player this summer. It’s the must-have accessory of the season, like hoverboards were last year.

But prospective buyers need to be strategic. They can’t just rock up and buy Leonardo Jardim’s entire squad because that would be weird, while they also can’t stick all their eggs in the Kylian Mbappe basket because Real Madrid are already carrying it to self-checkout. The key is to be realistic. Know your limits. And this is a lesson that Arsenal may finally be starting to learn.

The Mirror reports that the Gunners, having previously been linked with an ambitious £85m swoop for Mbappe, are instead planning to focus their efforts in his team-mate Thomas Lemar.

The 21-year-old France midfielder is said to be “very much at the top” of Arsene Wenger’s shopping list and would be available for a fee “well in excess of £25m”, which is not very specific. But still, it’s a dream that Arsenal fans can believe in (a lot more than they can believe in the dream about Wenger gracefully resigning, anyway).

Last summer, everyone wanted a Leicester player (and a hoverboard), but most of them weren’t available. This summer, they’re all for sale. The Star claims Riyad Mahrez is set to lead a “£100m exodus” from the King Power Stadium as the Foxes adjust to life outside the Champions League.

Last season’s PFA Player of the Year is set to join Paris Saint-Germain for £35m, while Kasper Schmeichel could move to Manchester City or Liverpool for a similar fee. The tabloid also predicts the departures of strikers Ahmed Musa, Leonardo Ulloa and Islam Slimani, who is apparently wanted by West Ham.

Highest-paid player

This is, however, the time of year where all strikers are wanted by West Ham, including some of the ones they wanted last summer.

The Mirror says the Hammers will try to sign Michy Bastshauyi, exactly one year after he snubbed them for Chelsea – a decision he soon came to regret after failing to make a single Premier League start for the Blues this season (although he’ll still get a Premier League winner’s medal, so maybe he doesn’t regret it that much).

Whether Batshauayi can still command the £33m fee the Irons were willing to pay for him last year remains to be seen.

West Ham have also offered to make ageing Manchester City right-back Pablo Zabaleta their highest-paid player, according to the Sun. The Hammers would reportedly be willing to pay the 32-year-old Argentine £100,000 a week for the next two years, having initially tried to sign his fellow City full-back Bacary Sagna.

But a more interesting piece of football gossip in the Sun concerns Real Madrid striker Karim Benzema, who the tabloid reveals was dumped by pop star Rihanna “because she will always love Chris Brown”. Which is a rather flattering turn of events for the former Sunderland and Preston striker.

Elsewhere, Claudio Ranieri is set to reject the chance to manage Nice because he is holding out for an offer from the Premier League, with Southampton and West Ham potential destinations (Mirror), Everton face competition from Atletico Madrid in the race to sign 21-year-old Malaga forward Sandro (Star) and Toffees striker Romelu Lukaku’s agent Mino Raiola is set to pocket a cool £2.5m from the Belgian’s likely transfer to Chelsea this summer (Mail). Is that all? It could be summer of austerity in the Raiola household compared to last year then.
