Gossip: Man Utd 'agree £27m Aurier deal despite UK ban', Morata 'discussed Tottenham move', Chelsea 'target Candreva'

In many ways, Serge Aurier is the ideal man to fill the right-back position that has been a thorn in Manchester United’s defence pretty much since Gary Neville retired.

He’s strong, he’s quick, he’s an experienced international, he’s a dedicated full-back unlike Antonio Valencia, he’s more defensively solid than Rafael da Silva, he’s more dynamic that Matteo Darmian, he’s not Guillermo Varela.

So the Red Devils’ alleged £27m move for the Paris Saint-Germain star (Mirror) seems to make perfect sense. They have finally found their Mr Right (back).

Except there’s just one teensy problem. Aurier is not allowed to enter the United Kingdom because he is a convicted criminal.

Yeah, it’s a bit of a deal-breaker. But lovestruck United are not deterred. They are reportedly so desperate to make things work with Mr Right (back) that they are willing to ignore his violent past. (We just don’t know him like Ed Woodward does, he’s actually ever so sweet when they’re alone together.)

The Mirror reports that United have “agreed” to sign Aurier on a £90,000-a-week deal, even though his prison sentence for assaulting a police officer in 2016 means he cannot set foot on British soil.

The club are hoping the conviction will be overturned by French appeal courts next week. And if it isn’t, then they can just meet him in Dubai every now and again for a dirty weekend.

Carlton Cole plays very badly

In another silly transfer story, Tottenham manager Mauricio Pochettino says in the Mail that he spoke to Chelsea’s recent record signing Alvaro Morata about moving to Tottenham.

And the Spanish striker apparently said in response, “Why do you want me if you have Harry Kane?”

To which Pochettino presumably replied, “Good point. And anyway I don’t have any money. Sorry for wasting your time, Alvaro.”

Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger has categorically “told” Alexis Sanchez that he will not be allowed to join another English club this summer, says the Times.

However, Gunners players who witnessed the Chilean’s return to training on Tuesday were left “convinced” that he wants to leave, with Manchester City his “preferred choice”, says the Mail.

Chelsea are set to make a £23m move for Internazionale winger Antonio Candreva after the Italians lined up Lazio’s Keita Balde as his replacement, counters the Mirror. Balde is set to choose between Inter and Juventus, and is evidently completely ignoring a rival bid that was made by West Ham. Understandable.

Elsewhere, Barcelona have identified Dortmund’s Ousmane Dembele and Juve’s Paulo Dybala as potential replacements for PSG-bound Neymar (Independent), Man Utd, Tottenham and Arsenal are competing to sign unsettled Man City starlet Jadon Sancho (Mirror) and West Ham legend Carlton Cole is on the verge of being sacked by Indonesian club Persib Bandung after the club’s manager said he “played very badly” compared to other foreign players (Mail).

Cole, however, has insisted on fighting for his place, saying, “I don’t like to leave unfinished business,” because winning Indonesian’s Liga 1 with Persib is one of his life-long ambitions and there’s no way he’s quitting now he’s got this close to achieving it.
