Will Jose Mourinho and Ed Woodward just go and approach him while he’s sitting on the bench in the first half?

Elsewhere, United and Chelsea are poised to go “head-to-head” for Paris Saint-Germain right-back Serge Aurier, who is available for about £27m (Mail).

The Mirror says Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp will not sanction the sale of Phillippe Coutinho to Barcelona “for any price” and he apparently has the “full backing” of the club’s board.

But that could change if Coutinho follows Van Dijk’s lead and hands in a transfer request. The Reds and Chelsea are battling to sign the Dutchman, although the Telegraph says the Blues are banking on “poor relations” between Liverpool and Southampton to give them the edge. They can’t be that poor though, given that Liverpool have signed approximately 72 players from the Saints in the past four seasons.

Speaking of Southampton, the Saints will target Middlesbrough’s £30m-rated centre-back Ben Gibson as a replacement for Van Dijk (Sun) and Turkish side Trabzonspor want to sign Spurs flop Moussa Sissoko (Standard). So at least it’s not all bad news for Tottenham.

Man United and Inter battle for Rose

Great news, Tottenham fans! Danny Rose is close to making a return to full training after recovering from a knee injury. Yay!

Bad news, Tottenham fans. Danny Rose’s imminent recovery from a knee injury has put him back on the transfer radars of Manchester United and Internazionale. D’oh!

While enduring an unpleasant summer in which the likes of Kyle Walker, Dele Alli and Eric Dier have been repeatedly linked with moves away from north London, Spurs have least been spared similar speculation about their left-back. Because he was injured, so that was all right.

But no sooner has Rosey slipped out of his knee brace that he’s suddenly become a wanted man again, with the Mirror claiming that United and Inter have “reignited their interest” in signing him in this window.

Having already lost Walker to Manchester City, Spurs chairman Daniel Levy will have no absolutely no desire to sell another full-back.

But Rose, who earns £70,000 a week at White Hart Lane/Wembley or wherever we are currently supposed to refer to as Tottenham’s home ground, may already be making the point from the treatment room – raising his crutch in the air for emphasis – that he could earn double that by leaving.

The Mirror suggests Rose could play again “before the end of this month”. So there’s only one thing for it – enlist Victor Wanyama to inflict another injury on him so that he remains sidelined until September.
