Hot Football Transfer Gossip: Zlatan 'will leave Man Utd if they don't win Europa League', Arsenal 'in talks with Allegri', Everton 'target £55m Van Dijk'

The Europa League has had an image problem for as long as it has existed, living as it does in the grander, sexier, more profitable shadow of its sister competition.

If the Champions League is Rihanna, the Europa League is Stacey Solomon. The X Factor reject of knockout European football.

But this much maligned cup (league?) has today been handed a sensational credibility boost, for it has been touched – literally and figuratively – by Zlatan.

The Mirror reports that Manchester United’s Swedish superstar will QUIT (the caps are theirs, obviously) Old Trafford this summer if they fail to win the Europa League, which would appear to be the Red Devils’ best hope of making out with Rihanna next season.

“Friends of Ibrahimovic”, in addition to being really cool because they’re friends with Zlatan, apparently believe the 35-year-old will “walk away” from United if they don’t make the Champions League, and at this point hardly anyone thinks they will achieve that aim by finishing fourth in the Premier League.

It’s unclear whether Europa League bigwigs have specifically hired Zlatan to think these things and add some A-list kudos to their trophy, but it has certainly added some extra spice to United’s trip to Anderlecht this evening.

The Mirror adds that Zlatan has “lucrative offers from Major League Soccer and the Chinese Super League”, although to be fair none of those teams will be in the Champions League next season either.

There are conflicting reports about Arsene Wenger’s future at Arsenal. The Sun says the Gunners board are “in talks” with Juventus manager Max Allegri about replacing the Frenchman, while the Mirror reveals that Wenger has “started telling colleagues” at the Emirates he intends to sign a new two-year deal. Sounds like this could get awkward.

Everton are planning to “test Southampton’s resolve” by launching a summer bid for Saints defender Virgil van Dijk, but the Dutchman could apparently cost £55m (Liverpool Echo). That’s more than David Moyes would spend in about five years when he was at Goodison Park.

Fulham are insisting their 16-year-old, left-footed sensation Ryan Sessegnon is “going nowhere” this summer despite interest from Chelsea, Arsenal, Manchester City and Liverpool (Metro). Oooh, scary Fulham.

Liverpool have held talks, according to the Express, with Paris Saint-Germain’s highly rated 17-year-old defender Mahamadou Dembele, not to be confused with Moussa Dembele, Mousa Dembele, Ousmane Dembele or Mamadou Sakho.

Elsewhere, Athletic Bilbao coach Ernesto Valverde has emerged as the “clear favourite” to replace Luis Enrique at Barcelona (Marca), Newcastle have made Stoke City captain Ryan Shawcross their number one summer transfer target (Independent) and Chelsea have sent scouts to watch 19-year-old, £25m-rated Sporting Gijon defender Jorge Mere (Star). The Blues could apparently “sign the player and loan him back out for a season to aid his development”. For a change.
