Tommy Simkin wants to see off challenges from Port Vale on two fronts while out on loan from Stoke City.

The 20-year-old goalkeeper is helping Walsall challenge for the League Two title alongside fellow Stoke youth graduate Nathan Lowe, who has scored 12 times already this season. Walsall are top after 19 games, four points ahead of Vale with a match in hand.

He picked up his eighth clean sheet of the season at the weekend to stay joint second in the divisional charts on that front, level with Vale's Connor Ripley and Crewe Alexandra stopper Filip Marschall and one behind AFC Wimbledon's Owen Goodman.

And he told the Express & Star: "We want to win the golden glove. After every game when I get a clean sheet, me and (keeper coach) Dan Still are like that's another one ticked off.

"It's good. I think we got seven last year so to beat that already and we're not even at Christmas yet is a really good stepping stone for me in my career. But I've got to keep on going to win it because I know there are some really good goalkeepers in the league.

"We just want to make this place so hard for people to come to and to play against us. The lads are brilliant and we've just got to keep it up. Focus on one game at a time and see where that takes us."

Walsall are next in action on Saturday away at Harrogate Town.
