Huddersfield Giants plot Shay Stadium purchase amid relocation plans
Huddersfield Giants owner Ken Davy has outlined plans to purchase The Shay which will see the Super League club relocate to Halifax in 2026.
Calderdale Council want to sell the facility, which is the home of Championship club Halifax Panthers, and have been fielding expressions of interest in recent months.
And Davy has made a move to acquire the facility that would allow the Giants to move there moving forward, however, only on a short-term basis. Last year, Davy outlined his desire to secure Huddersfield a purpose-built stadium that would be better suited to the club than their existing home, the John Smith's Stadium.

Huddersfield Town are in the process of purchasing the facility off Kirklees Council and while the Giants are free to remain there, Davy would like to move and push forward with plans for a new facility.
As part of his vision for The Shay, Davy says he will renovate the stadium so it is Super League standard, which would include a new hybrid pitch and drainage system, something that has been an ongoing issue for many years. Beyond that, it would provide security for FC Halifax Town and the Panthers, whose IMG score would also likely be boosted once the work to the stadium is done.
The Shay Stadium has a capacity of approximately 14,000 and is around eight miles from their current home.
“I am excited by the opportunity to work with FC Halifax Town, Halifax Panthers and Calderdale Council, on the potential upgrading of the Shay to make it into an outstanding Community Stadium facility for the benefit of all," Davy said.
“I believe that bringing it up to Super League standard would dramatically improve the match day experience for spectators and encourage more fans to support both FC Halifax and the Panthers.
“From the Giants’ perspective, whilst the upgrading of the Shay would be costly, it could be the ideal interim solution for us whilst we progress plans for a new stadium in Huddersfield.”
Panthers CEO Damian Clayton added: “At Halifax Panthers, we remain optimistic about the future of the Shay Stadium and are committed to working collaboratively with Calderdale Council, FC Halifax Town, and Mr. Davy to explore all opportunities.
“We believe the Shay has the potential to evolve into a vibrant community hub, securing the longevity of professional sport played here while promoting diversity, inclusion, and well-being.
“Alongside these discussions, we are diligently working to fully substantiate the details within our own Business Plan, ensuring we have a robust contingency in place should further consideration be required. We are confident that through collective effort, a sustainable and mutually beneficial outcome can be achieved for the benefit of all.”
