Huddersfield Town ace has promotion warning for big-spending Birmingham City and Wrexham
Huddersfield Town match-winner Herbie Kane believes that their promotion rivals will be “looking over their shoulder” at his side following their excellent run of form. The Terriers closed the gap to the automatic promotion places to four points with their 1-0 win at second-placed Wycombe Wanderers on Tuesday night, while Town also have a game in hand.
Michael Duff’s side are now 15 matches unbeaten in League One, with the Terriers having won ten and drawn five of those games to pick up 35 points during that run.
Kane believes the sides that are also pushing for promotion will be wary of Town due to their strong form, with the midfielder telling BBC Radio Leeds following Tuesday’s victory: “They’re doing well this season (Wycombe), you can see that by their results and where they are in the table, so we came into this game knowing that they’d be looking over their shoulder at us, and I think other teams around us will be doing that, because we’re in good form, and we’re going to make sure we do what we can to carry it on.”

Their victory in midweek leaves Town fourth in the table, on 47 points from 24 matches played. Discussing his side’s automatic promotion chances this term, Kane added: “I don’t know, we’ll see. We’re just going to see how high we can get. We’re going to go to Shrewsbury on Saturday and try and win that game, and that’s our main focus at the moment.”
Kane’s goal proved decisive at Adams Park, with Town having to dig in throughout the second half to take home a vital three points.
The Terriers consigned the Chairboys to just their second league defeat since August, while leaders Birmingham City are the only other side to have come away with all three points from Adams Park so far this term.
Acknowledging his side hadn’t played their best football in the win, Kane said: “It was a great team performance, it’s not the way we want to play or anything, but we dug out the result, and a bit of quality won us the game in the end.
“They make it hard. They put pressure [on you], they make you defend, and I thought we defended well as a team. When we defend well, it means that we can attack, and the moments that we did attack, we did look dangerous, but it was a tight game and we’re happy that we got the result we wanted.”
Kane netted the winning strike in the 15th minute, as the midfielder fired home a volley from a corner, and discussing the goal, he said: “I was just on the edge, the ball came out and I thought if I get good contact on it (he could score), and I did, and it went in, so I’m happy about that.
“A great feeling, I think I was due a goal, and I’m glad I got it in a game like this today.”
The strike was Kane’s second for the club in his 23rd appearance, and the summer recruit added to HTTV: “I think that’s something that I want to do better, score more goals and have more shots, and I think it shows tonight when I do do it, I can score, so hopefully I can build on that and continue getting better.”
