What Huddersfield Town defender Brodie Spencer said on Callum Marshall and his first career goal
Huddersfield Town defender Brodie Spencer admits it “means a lot” to have netted his first senior goal for the club.
The 20-year-old scored the first professional goal of his career in Saturday’s 2-2 draw against Lincoln City, with the defender playing a pivotal role in Town’s comeback.
Having been introduced shortly before half-time at 2-0 down, Spencer went on to bring the Terriers back into the game with a 49th-minute strike, before providing the assist for Callum Marshall’s equaliser in the 89th minute.

Spencer was delighted to see both him and fellow Northern Ireland international Marshall get on the scoresheet, telling HTTV: “It’s obviously good to get my first professional goal, and I think it just makes it a bit special when Callum gets a goal as well.
“We’ve known each other for a lot of years, and to be able to go down and get a goal, and him getting a goal, it means a lot to me. The manager always says ‘when you’re on the bench, just be ready to come on and impact the game, and help the team’, which when I came on I knew that I needed to do, so I’m just happy to get the goal and assist.
“I’ve been here for nearly five years now, so the club means a lot to me. To be able to go out there and get my first professional goal, it obviously means a lot to me. It’s just a very important one for me as well.”
The Terriers deservedly trailed heading into the break after a disappointing first-half performance and Spencer felt that a “lift in intensity” was behind his side’s improved second-half showing and subsequent comeback.
“When it’s 2-0, you know the next goal means so much, so to be able to go out there and obviously get that first goal and change the momentum of the game meant a lot,” the defender added.
“All we needed was a lift in intensity, and as soon as that happened, the game sort of just flipped, and then everything started going our way a bit. The patterns of play started coming out, and we started to control the game a lot more.
“There were a few decisions that went against us, and I think there was a shout for a pen, and from where I was standing, it looked like a clear pen, and obviously it wasn’t given. I think it was just important that we got out there and got those two goals to secure a point.”
Spencer has not been included in the starting 11 for the last four league matches, and the defender said of the battle to get into the side: “I think we have a big squad and it’s very competitive.
“There are a lot of good players, and places are up for grabs. I think every time that there’s an opportunity, you have to go out there and show what you’re about.”
The Terriers now head into the Christmas period, starting with a trip to face Cambridge United on Friday, before Michael Duff’s side see out the year with back-to-back home clashes against Stockport County and Burton Albion.
Spencer feels that his side are well placed ahead of the busy run, saying: “There are a lot of games and a lot of opportunities to pick up points, which I think comes at a good point for us.
“Obviously we’ve got a lot of momentum going, especially at home. I think that’s eight unbeaten now at home, so I think that’s very important, and it’s come at a good time. I think it’s about now just focusing, and taking it game by game.”
