Huddersfield Town reaction demanded as promotion challenge has January wobble
Huddersfield Town boss Michael Duff is looking for his side to “show a reaction” from their reverse fixture against Northampton Town in tomorrow's clash at Sixfields. The fourth-placed Terriers take on the fifth-from-bottom Cobblers in League One tomorrow afternoon, with Town aiming to get back to winning ways following back-to-back home defeats against Bolton Wanderers and Birmingham City.
Duff’s side suffered a 3-1 defeat to Northampton at the John Smith’s Stadium back in September, where the Terriers were three down prior to the hour mark, before Josh Koroma pulled a goal back late on and also had a penalty saved. Reflecting on that loss and looking ahead to tomorrow's encounter, the head coach said at a press conference yesterday: “We were poor, but they were good on the day.
“I don’t think I’m being disrespectful, last year Jon (Brady) did a really good job with them, and they’re in that sort of bracket where they’re looking to stay in the league every year, and they’re in that same position this year – just based on size of club, finances and things like that, I’ve been at a similar size club, but they have got some good players. People like Tyler Roberts playing for them earlier in the season, I thought he was really good, and everyone will know what he did at Leeds and things like that.

“A new manager’s (Kevin Nolan) come in, they’ve changed their shape a little, they look like they’re trying to be quite aggressive, but we’ve just had two disappointing results, so we need to try and get back on the horse from our point of view, and show a reaction from the last time they played us, because we weren’t good enough against them.”
That defeat against the Cobblers was the first in a four-game losing streak earlier in the campaign, and while his side head into tomorrow's clash having been beaten in their last two matches, Duff said: “I don’t think we’ve lost the last two games because we’ve fallen to pieces. I think in that run, we fell to pieces.
“From different moments, we found every which way to lose a game. Whether it was a Micha (Michal Helik) own goal, whether it was someone getting injured early, whether it was just starting a game really poorly and turning into a team of individuals.
“We’ve been beaten in the last two, but we’ve not turned into a team of individuals. We know why we’ve lost the last two games, so before we didn’t know why we were losing, because there were loads of different reasons, we know why we’ve lost the last two.
“There are three parts to a game, there’s with the ball, without the ball and transition. The other night, we were really good without the ball, we were good in transition, we weren’t good enough with the ball.”
Discussing team news, Duff confirmed that Tom Lees broke his nose in the defeat to Birmingham, but said that the defender should be available for tomorrow afternoon’s encounter providing he can wear a mask. Ben Wiles is set to return to the squad after missing the clash in midweek, while David Kasumu remains sidelined with a hamstring injury.
“Tom broke his nose, they just couldn’t stop the bleeding,” the head coach said. “There was a worry about a concussion, but I don’t think there was a concussion. I think he’ll be available, I think he’ll have to wear a mask. I don’t know where we’re at, in terms of that process, whether he can get that mask done in time for Saturday or not.
“It’s an occupational hazard unfortunately when you play centre-half. You normally get to Leesy’s age and you’ve normally done two or three of them. It’s not a nice thing and it’s pretty painful, but he won’t be out for six weeks with it.”
“Kasumu won’t be available, he’s not training yet. He’s close, he’s on the grass, but he’s not available for selection,” Duff added.
“Wilesy couldn’t get his boot on through swelling on Monday afternoon, Tuesday, so he’ll be fine now. They’ve just put a bit of padding on it, which happens a lot with toes and kicks and ankles, and things like that, so Wilesy will be fine.”
