Huddersfield Town closed the gap to the League One automatic promotion places by registering a 1-0 victory at fellow high-fliers Wycombe Wanderers on Tuesday evening.

Herbie Kane’s first-half volley gave the fourth-placed Terriers the win against second-placed Wycombe at Adams Park, with Town consigning their fellow promotion-chasers to just their second league defeat since August.

The result leaves Town on 47 points from 24 matches played, with Michael Duff’s side moving to within four points of the Chairboys with a game in hand.

The Terriers extended their unbeaten run in the league to 15 matches with their victory, while Town also registered a fourth straight win on the road in the division.

Head coach Duff made two changes to the side that drew 0-0 with Rotherham United on Saturday. Matty Pearson and Ollie Turton came into the team for Nigel Lonwijk and Michal Helik, while Radinio Balker was included in the matchday squad for the first time this season.

Town had the game’s first attempt with four minutes played, as Turton had a strike from range blocked.

The hosts then had a spell on the front foot during the early stages, with Town clearing a corner and a couple of crosses within the opening ten minutes.

However, the Terriers had the first meaningful chance of the contest, with Joe Hodge sending Callum Marshall towards goal, but the forward fired over the crossbar from outside the box.

The West Ham United loanee then met Josh Koroma’s cross soon after, but Chairboys’ stopper Franco Ravizzoli tipped the ball around the post.

Town took the lead from the resulting corner in the 15th minute, as Ben Wiles’ ball in was punched away by Ravizzoli, but only as far as Kane, who fired home a fine volley over the pack of bodies in the box to put the visitors in front.

A quiet spell followed the goal, with the only chance from either side prior to the half hour mark falling to Dan Udoh, but Jacob Chapman was out to claim ahead of the forward.

The Chairboys began to take control of the contest from the 30-minute mark, with Tyreeq Bakinson volleying over following a free-kick, while Josh Scowen’s goalbound effort was headed away by Kane.

Onyedinma was sent into the box by Bakinson soon after, but the winger could only run the ball out for a goal kick when under pressure from Chapman.

Brodie Spencer headed wide deep into first-half stoppage time as Town went into the break a goal to the good, with the Terriers having done well to limit their hosts to few meaningful chances before the break.

The sides had a chance apiece in the opening minutes of the second half, with Udoh having a shot blocked from distance, while Marshall had a low strike held by Ravizzoli.

The Chairboys couldn’t take advantage of an excellent opportunity eight minutes after the restart, as Cameron Humphreys’ cross dropped to Richard Kone in the box, but the striker was foiled twice by Chapman from close range.

The hosts then had a couple of decent opportunities on the hour mark when in the ascendancy, with strikes from Udoh and Onyedinma being deflected wide in quick succession.

Wycombe made a quadruple change with 20 minutes to play as they went in search of a leveller, while Balker made his return after Spencer had to come off.

The Chairboys continued to dominate possession and territory heading into the closing stages, but were limited to a harmless effort from Dan Harvie that went over the bar in the lead up to the 80-minute mark.

The hosts had two excellent chances in the final minutes as Scowen headed over when unmarked from a corner and Bakinson’s volley struck the crossbar, but Town held on to claim an important victory.
