Huddersfield Town set a standard in defeat that must be matched every week says star
Huddersfield Town goalkeeper Lee Nicholls believes his side’s display in the defeat to Wrexham should be the “standard” for their remaining performances this season. The Terriers were beaten 1-0 by their fellow promotion hopefuls at the John Smith’s Stadium on Tuesday evening, consigning Town to a third defeat from their last four matches.
Despite the loss, Nicholls was pleased with how his side played against the Red Dragons, telling HTTV: “I think the performance overall was really good.
“I came off in the game against Wigan (Athletic, a 2-1 defeat) and did an interview, and I was probably a bit down and disappointed in the way we played overall I think, but I think we were the better team tonight.

“I think the performance was there, on another day we score a couple of goals. I haven’t seen any of the goals or chances back, so it’s hard for me to say at the minute, but right now I would say I’m overall pleased.
“After the game, I went into the lads and said ‘that’s the standard now’. I think that’s the sort of performance that we expect from each other, and I think that’s the performance that we need to give to the fans.
“If we expect them to back us every week, then that’s the bare minimum in my opinion. We go out, we give everything, we move the ball quick, we cause teams problems and we create chances, and on another day I think we could’ve scored a couple.
“I’m not too sure about Josh’s (Koroma) [disallowed] goal, I haven’t seen it back, but on another day we win the game. Wrexham are a good side, a lot of experience in there, there’s multiple players that have played [in the] Premier League.
“For me, I’m overall pleased. I’m disappointed about the result obviously, don’t get me wrong, but I just hope we can move on from this now and we can build on this, and take it into Saturday. Bristol (Rovers) will be a tough game, but I think if we take it into Saturday we’ll be hard to live with.”
Nicholls reflected on the fine margins in a tight contest between the sides, adding: “At the end of the day, I’ve made a save, and it’s ricocheted out to one of their lads who’s tapped it in. Their keeper spills one, and unfortunately it just doesn’t land to us, and another day someone’s there to tap it in.”
The setback leaves Town sixth in the League One table, on 58 points from 35 matches played. The Terriers are just one point inside the play-off places, while seventh-placed Bolton Wanderers have a game in hand.
The Terriers take on fifth-from-bottom Bristol Rovers next up at the Memorial Stadium on Saturday, 3pm kick-off, and Nicholls added: “I think everyone said their piece in the dressing room after the game then, and the mood’s a lot better than after the Wigan game. After the Wigan game, there were a few harsh words between each other, which is the way it should be, but today it was mostly positive.
“We expect a good performance from each other. There are really good players in that dressing room, and it just hasn’t clicked recently, whether that’s through injury, people not being match fit just coming back from injury, but today it clicked.
“It’s up to us to build on this now, I think this is something that we can take forward now, and build on it and cause teams problems.”
