Huddersfield Town face an anxious wait to discover the severity of Joe Taylor's hamstring injury. The striker, the Terriers' marquee signing in the January transfer window, sat-out Tuesday's defeat to League One leaders Birmingham City.

Head coach Michael Duff said: “We took him [Taylor] off on Saturday as a precaution. It was not an injury. He came in on Sunday and (on Monday) he reported a funny feeling in his hamstring. Like a cramp sensation. We just can’t take the risk at the minute.

"We’ve had it imaged (Taylor issue) and when we get the results, we will wait and see. Hopefully, it’s nothing serious because we don't need another injury.”

Experienced defender Tom Lees was in the wars late on against the Blues following a duel with big striker Lyndon Dykes. The centre-back was taken off and replaced by Radinio Balker towards the end of the contest as a concussion sub.

“It was his nose, but I’ve not spoken to the doctor and not seen it back. It was used as a concussion (sub), but I don’t know if it was a concussion or not," said Duff. "They could not stem it basically. I have not seen the incident back, so don’t want to get involved in that.”

Keshi Anderson’s 49th-minute wonder-strike secured City maximum points and sentenced Town to a second home defeat in four days. “It was a tight game and one moment of quality wins them the game," claimed Duff. "I don’t think our keeper’s had a save to make in the game.

“But we just didn’t have the quality and were playing too slow. I’ve just seen their goal again and they’ve taken the throw-in quickly and worked it across the face of the box and we just didn’t do that, I’m not sure why.

“I didn’t think there was much in the game and if one of our players had smashed the ball into the top corner from 25 yards and we’d won 1-0, I think Chris would be sitting here saying the same thing.

“We’re in a funny spell at the moment with a lot of players coming back from injury, so we’re trying to get people fit on the job while playing good teams.

“I think we’re come out of the window a stronger team than when we went into the window, but I think we also feel we squeezed every little bit out of them before the January transfer window.”

It was a damaging result for Town in the race for automatic promotion. They now trail second-placed Wycombe Wanderers, who claimed a late win at home to Barnsley, by 10 points.

Duff's men are back on the road on Saturday as they travel to relegation-threatened Northampton Town.
