Hugo Lloris mocked, as Croatia's president and VAR almost steal the show

France won the World Cup after beating Croatia 4-2 in a breathless and drama-filled final in Moscow.

To no-one’s surprise, social media exploded as Les Bleus lifted the trophy, the heavens opened and political leaders almost stole the headlines.

US President Donald Trump was one of the first to offer his congratulations to the French football team.

There was even time for infamous feminist punk/rock group Pussy Riot to stage a pitch invasion.

Once the World Cup was over, the heavens opened up and it appeared organisers had only brought out one umbrella for officials, and guess who got that?

But by that point people had begun to notice Croatian President Kolinda Grabar-Kitarović, whose hugs threatened to steal the headlines.

But French fans didn’t care about the rain in Moscow, they had other thing son their mind.

And of course, the referee’s decision to consult VAR to award France a first-half penalty stoked plenty of debate.

One thing people could agree on however, was Luka Modric. There was an outpouring of sympathy for the Croatian maestro, who was named the World Cup’s best player but couldn’t quite lead his team past the final hurdle.

However, there was little sympathy for Hugo Lloris, as his goalkeeping howler almost let Croatia back into the match at 4-2.

As it happened, he didn’t.
