Hugo Lloris mocked, as Croatia's president and VAR almost steal the show
France won the World Cup after beating Croatia 4-2 in a breathless and drama-filled final in Moscow.
To no-one’s surprise, social media exploded as Les Bleus lifted the trophy, the heavens opened and political leaders almost stole the headlines.
US President Donald Trump was one of the first to offer his congratulations to the French football team.
Congratulations to France, who played extraordinary soccer, on winning the 2018 World Cup. Additionally, congratulations to President Putin and Russia for putting on a truly great World Cup Tournament — one of the best ever!

There was even time for infamous feminist punk/rock group Pussy Riot to stage a pitch invasion.
Just happy to be at the #WorldCupFinal, tbh. #FRACRO pic.twitter.com/1puP29A28q

Once the World Cup was over, the heavens opened up and it appeared organisers had only brought out one umbrella for officials, and guess who got that?
Sir how many umbrellas should we bring?
Putin: Just one. They didn't let us win. Let them soak! #FRACRO #WorldCup #WorldCupFinal pic.twitter.com/RM0Qzv1xW6

Putin having a henchman hold an umbrella over him while the presidents of FIFA, France or Croatia get drenched is the ultimate boss move pic.twitter.com/iY5vpikaji

But by that point people had begun to notice Croatian President Kolinda Grabar-Kitarović, whose hugs threatened to steal the headlines.
I want someone to hug me the way Croatia’s president hugs everyone.😂 pic.twitter.com/9V4B6LQFta

Interesting lack of gallantry at the World Cup presentation with no sign of umbrella for the President of Croatia! pic.twitter.com/TFDMXT4HPO

But French fans didn’t care about the rain in Moscow, they had other thing son their mind.

And of course, the referee’s decision to consult VAR to award France a first-half penalty stoked plenty of debate.
Pitana? More like Pinata! The ref is getting an absolute panning for awarding a penalty after checking VAR…https://t.co/oEAjDQOMKd

It’s the referee’s mistake not VAR! VAR is just a replay of an incident!! #WorldCup #FRACRO

It was all going too well! Ridiculous decision 😡 NO NO NO VAR #FRACRO #Worldcup2018Russia

VAR goes rogue and awards itself the world cup

One thing people could agree on however, was Luka Modric. There was an outpouring of sympathy for the Croatian maestro, who was named the World Cup’s best player but couldn’t quite lead his team past the final hurdle.

However, there was little sympathy for Hugo Lloris, as his goalkeeping howler almost let Croatia back into the match at 4-2.

In 20 minutes Hugo Lloris will lift the World Cup and probably drop it.

As it happened, he didn’t.
