Hull City have completed the signing of attacking midfielder Matt Crooks after agreeing a deal with MLS side Real Salt Lake in what is their first of the January transfer window.

City agreed a deal with the MLS club earlier this week after extensive talks with the 30-year-old which began last month, which has seen Crooks pen a two-and-a-half-year deal at the MKM Stadium and the Tigers paying an undisclosed fee.

The former Middlesbrough stalwart underwent his medical on Monday before signing terms on his switch back to the Championship on Tuesday, but he is not expected to be involved in a playing capacity on Sunday in the FA Cup third-round clash with Doncaster Rovers at the MKM Stadium.

Crooks arrived back in England on Friday, having briefly jetted back to the US in the past couple of days to finalise his move away from the MLS. He will wear the number 24 shirt vacated back in the summer by Jean Michael Seri.

He becomes Ruben Selles' first signing since taking charge a month ago and is the first since Jared Dublin assumed the role of sporting director at the MKM Stadium following a backroom reshuffle.

The Leeds-born midfielder was a guest of honour at his former club Middlesbrough when they beat City 3-1 at the Riverside Stadium on November 30, after returning to England with the MLS currently preparing for the new campaign, which gets underway next month.

Crooks spent three years at Boro after arriving from Rotherham United in July 2021 but left to move to Utah in February. However, after less than a year in the USA and 33 appearances, the versatile midfielder is back in England and the Championship, despite penning a three-year deal almost 12 months ago.

Capable of playing anywhere across midfield or even up front, Crooks played 115 times for Boro and also had spells with Scottish giants Rangers, Northampton Town and Scunthorpe United.

The Tigers remain in talks over deals to sign two wingers and a couple of defenders, while Leeds United striker Joe Gelhardt remains a strong target.
