Gustavo Puerta says playing for Hull City brings him great joy, and that he has no qualms about staying at the club for more than just this season.

The 21-year-old is on loan at the Championship club from reigning German champions Bayer Leverkusen with City having the option to buy him in the summer.

That deal could happen sooner if Puerta reaches a certain number of league starts for the Tigers, which is understood to be just less than half of their 46 Championship games.

Puerta has caught the eye as he's settled into life in East Yorkshire, and scored his first goal in the FA Cup draw with Doncaster Rovers last month, with City going out on penalties to the League Two outfit.

The midfielder admits playing in England is a dream for so many players in South America, and the La Victoria-born ace is no different as he continues to get to grips with life on British shores.

"All the children in South America, in particular, Colombia, they have this dream to come to Europe. We watch the UEFA Champions League, UEFA Europa League, and you aim to be there one day," the Colombian told Hull Live. "Now it's time, and I should thank God for providing me with this chance. It's truly a dream come true. I should say that this is an incredible sensation. Discipline is needed, a lot of work. I will carry on working hard to show the best of myself, and I should thank God for the chance to play in Europe for Hull City."

Puerta's future beyond the summer remains up in the air, especially given City's perilous position in the Championship ahead of Wednesday night's trip to Burnley, and he says his focus for now is on performing on the pitch for Ruben Selles.

"This is an excellent club," Puerta said. "They support you, they give you everything, they're always there for you regardless. Now we should think step by step. I'm focused on playing. If I have to stay for many seasons, I will surely do it. Like I said, it's an excellent club. I love to be here and,, they follow you and they support you in every single aspect."

Puerta's move from Leverkusen to Hull City surprised one or two, but having featured sparingly under Xabi Alonso last term, his determination to play more football led him to the East Riding of Yorkshire.

"Leverkusen had an amazing season," he admitted. "I have the chance to play with the amazing players. I had an excellent manager in Xabi Alonso, who was also a fabulous player. We played in the same position in midfield, and I had a chance to learn so much from him. I also played with world-class teammates, although I did not have many minutes.

"I am a player who likes to play and loves the challenge. I love to feel important within a team, so I decided that I should search for a new club. I believe that it's better for me and I took the better decision, and now, I hope that I can show my abilities and I can show my best.

"Hull City is a club that will provide me joy, and the club supports me a lot, and I want to give back all those things that they did provide me throughout these months."
