It might not feel like much of an achievement given the excitement of last season, but the latest supercomputer prediction has backed Hull City to stay in the Championship.

City returned to the bottom three on Wednesday night as they kicked off 2025 with a stoppage-time defeat to Middlesbrough courtesy of Alex Gilbert's cool finish just as it looked like Ruben Selles' side would bag a valuable point and second clean sheet in a row.

Despite the bleak outlook of the table at this stage after 25 games of the season, the Tigers have been backed to get out of the bottom three in the remaining 21 encounters.

According to Grosvenor Sport, who have crunched the current data and predicted the remaining games of the league season, City will finish 19th with 49 points, which means Ruben Selles' side would need another 27 points to reach that total, at an average of more than 1.2 points per game, a stark improvement to what we've seen so far.

The table claims current bottom side Plymouth Argyle will be relegated back to League One after two seasons in the second tier and are set to be joined by Cardiff City and last season's League One winners Portsmouth, who thrashed Swansea City 4-0 on New Year's Day.

Stoke City, who have just appointed Mark Robins, and Derby County are the two teams predicted to finish just below the Tigers, which, given the current state of affairs, most Tigers fans would gleefully take just at the moment.

At the other end, perhaps surprisingly, Burnley are backed to go up as champions with 105 points, with Sunderland coming second, while current leaders and City's opponents on Saturday, Leeds United, will finish third, joining West Brom, Sheffield United and Blackburn Rovers completing the top six.
