Ruben Selles believes he has the characters in his dressing room to drag Hull City away from relegation trouble at the wrong end of the Championship.

Wednesday night's 2-0 defeat at promotion-chasing Burnley left the Tigers mired inside the bottom three with just 15 games of the season to go and time quickly running out to turn things around.

City were well beaten at Turf Moor after two quick-fire goals in the opening 21 minutes left the visitors with a mountain to climb, and one that always looked difficult given the hosts had kept nine clean sheets before notching up a record-breaking tenth.

The Tigers now have a home game against Norwich City on Saturday to try and arrest another run of defeats, with their 3-0 success at Sheffield United on January 24 feeling a long time ago.

Selles' men fell back into the drop zone on Tuesday when Derby County drew 0-0 at home to Oxford United, and their quest to survive was made all the more challenging with important home wins for Portsmouth and Plymouth Argyle.

"If we don't win our matches, and when teams play when we don't, and they get the points, that is the competition," Selles told Hull Live.

"We don't pay too much attention to when we are out or when we are in the relegation zone we need to do our job and we will be in a good place.

"We need to start winning football matches if we want to be out of that and we have been a bit of in and out and show character to move forward.

"When I talk about character it is about going and being competitive in situations we want to be competitive in and get better in the part of games we need to get better in.

"We have a good dressing room here and they are fighting for everything and then it is always my responsibility to put them in the same direction because there is good football and enough character to get us out of the situation.

"We knew when we arrived that it would be difficult and we wouldn't be able to change it from one day to the other but with a bit of fight we have created enough to move forward."
