Hull City's quest to bolster their midfield ranks has moved a big step closer after Monaco midfielder Elio Matazo passed a medical and agreed to a long-term contract.

The 22-year-old midfielder underwent a medical on Monday ahead of his proposed move to City from the Ligue 1 side, which went smoothly before he accepted terms on a contract until 2029.

City have moved quickly to snare the highly-rated Belgium midfielder after a move to Nantes stalled. He could be in the squad when the Tigers face Yorkshire rivals Sheffield United at Bramall Lane on Friday night.

The deal has not been completely signed off by all parties yet. But there are not expected to be any hiccups in the deal which will see the Tigers pay in the region of £1.8m to snap up the defensive midfielder in what is being viewed as quite a coup for a player who has played in the Champions League this season for Monaco, amid 84 career appearances with the principality club.

Speaking ahead of Tuesday night's home meeting with QPR at the MKM Stadium, boss Ruben Selles was coy over Matazo's imminent arrival, but did say any player that has come through their system would be a player he felt would be well suited to the Tigers.

"As you know, I would prefer not to speak about players that are not playing for my team," Selles told Hull Live. "I will just say that I know the Monaco project and the Monaco people working there and the way that they work with their manager Adi Hütter, and any player from their system will fit and suit our system."
