Hull City will not be signing Nottingham Forest midfielder Lewis O'Brien, despite transfer links to the out of favour former Huddersfield Town ace.

City have been consistently linked with a move for the 26-year-old for over 12 months. Alhough the Tigers have cast an eye over the experienced performer, most recently in October, the finances of the deal have always it a difficult one to get over the line.

The Tigers have since moved to sign 22-year-old Belgian man Eliot Matazo in a deal worth in the region of £1.8m from French Ligue 1 outfit Monaco, and therefore have no cause to try and do a deal for O'Brien.

O'Brien remains an outcast at the City Ground, though he has returned from a spell in the MLS with Los Angeles, which ended on New Year's Eve and is now looking for another move.

Since joining Forest following their promotion to the Premier League, the experienced performer has had loan spells at DC United and Middlesbrough, as well as in LA. He has again been linked with a move to City's Championship rivals Blackburn Rovers after a previous move to Ewood Park collapsed, but again, O'Brien's salary makes it a difficult deal to do in this window.

It's believed O'Brien is on a salary of around £40,000 per week at Forest on a contract which runs until next summer, which would make a deal difficult for most clubs in the Championship without the luxury of parachute payments.

The arrival of Matazo boosts City's midfield ranks. He will provide competition for in-form Steven Alzate, while Xavier Simons could be allowed to leave the club with Swedish side AIK keen to sign the 21-year-old former Chelsea youngster. As things stand, City are now only looking to sign a winger and left-back before the window closes at 11pm on February 3.
