Hull City have agreed a loan deal for Southampton left-back Charlie Taylor as the Tigers look to fill the void left by Ryan Giles, who is joining Middlesbrough. Taylor joined the Saints following promotion to the Premier League back in the summer under Russell Martin, penning a contract until June 2026, but has played just seven times for the bottom side, who are in danger of registering the lowest points tally in the league’s history.

His last outing came in a 5-0 defeat, playing 45 minutes, but he didn’t feature in the last two defeats at Manchester United and Nottingham Forest, with his Saints future in doubt. The York-born defender, who joined the St Mary’s club from Burnley, is understood to be mulling over a move back to the north of England on a loan deal until the end of the season and as yet has not committed to the switch.

City have been eying Taylor for a number of weeks after agreeing to finally allow Giles to return to Middlesbrough, and see the 31-year-old ex-Leeds United man as a player capable of making a big difference to Ruben Selles’ squad.

The Tigers expect a decision from Taylor in the next 24 hours and hope to conclude the short-term deal ahead of Friday night’s trip to Sheffield United, where they’ll look to respond to their 2-1 home loss to QPR on Tuesday evening which left Selles’ side just a place above the Championship’s drop zone.
