How Hull City's best starting XI now compares to summer transfer window

Hull City have become one of the busiest clubs in the country when it comes to transfers. January was no different for the Tigers, who signed eight players. No club in the Championship signed more.

Those eight come on the back of 17 new arrivals in the summer window, taking City's total tally to 25 since the end of last season, while there who a host of outgoings, too.

The summer window under former head coach Tim Walter saw the big-money arrivals of Charlie Hughes, Liam Millar, Mohamed Belloumi and Abu Kamara, amongst others, while Steven Alzate and Joao Pedro arrived on free transfers after the window had closed.

Belloumi, Kasey Palmer and Carl Rushworth all arrived on deadline day, with Palmer coming off the bench the following day at Leeds United. But given much of the club's transfer work came late in August, Walter was not able to name his strongest side until after the international break which followed that 2-0 defeat at Elland Road.

Arguably, with everybody fit, this was probably City's strongest XI in the immediate aftermath of the window closing, given it was before Alzate and Pedro arrived.

Fast forward to the beginning of February and seven of that side are now unavailable, whether that's because they're injured, or have left the club. Rushworth, Giles and Bedia have all moved on while Oscar Zambrano is suspended pending an appeal. Millar and Belloumi are out for the season following ACL surgeries. As it stands, Palmer is sidelined but is expected back before the end of this month.

The side (and management staff) that take to the field at Turf Moor on Wednesday night will look completely different from the one that walked out at Elland Road the day after the summer window closed on August 30, 166 days earlier.

While Walter wasn't necessarily blessed with a plethora of options in late August, the same can't be said for Ruben Selles after a really encouraging January. Arguably, the weakest area of the side is at left-back, but after three successive clean sheets away from home with Sean McLoughlin operating on that side, there is reason for hope.

Picking Selles' best side now is difficult, and that's how it should be. John Egan will make a case for being in that first XI once he's up to speed, and leaving out Gustavo Puerta, Regan Slater and Abu Kamara is also extremely harsh, but those are the tough decisions facing Selles now he's got options at his disposal.
