Oxford United boss Gary Rowett has confirmed the resurgent U's look set to miss out on in-demand Hull City winger Ryan Longman after the player made it clear he wanted to join Wrexham.

Both United and the Welsh outfit had bids in the region of £500,000 accepted by City for the 24-year-old who is out of contract at the MKM Stadium in the summer, and was not being offered fresh terms.

Rowett is a big admirer of Longman after taking him to Millwall last season on loan from the Tigers and thought he'd got a deal with terms agreed and a medical booked earlier this week, but League One promotion-chasing Wrexham have won Longman's heart, and it's expected he will complete a move to the Racecourse Ground after agreeing terms with Phil Parkinson's Hollywood-famed outfit.

“He’s a player that I’ve worked with before. I think he’s got obvious qualities," Rowett said. "He was a player we were certainly interested in, but I don’t expect us to do that deal and sign that player. We’ve had lots of targets and lots of deals that we’re potentially trying to get down the line. Certainly he was just one of those.

“You see it where we’ve got plenty of players on our bench who haven’t maybe had as much game time as we’ve spoke about. Ole [Romeny] is one of those who came into the squad. He’s certainly got a lot of quality as well. Idris [El Mizouni] is one that hasn’t got on the pitch much and he’s got a lot of quality. We’ll look to the market, but we’ve also got players here that want game time and want the opportunity. It’s always a balancing act.”

Longman will link up with former Tigers teammate Andy Cannon in Wales and will hope to seal a quick-fire promotion with Wrexham, owned by Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney, third in the table, three points off the top two - Birmingham City and Wycombe Wanderers.
