Ryan Giles has spoken about his desire to remain at Middlesbrough permanently after making his second debut for the club at Deepdale on Saturday.

Giles arrived back or a second spell at the Riverside Stadium last week when Boro agreed a loan deal with Hull City for the 24-year-old, with the Tigers paying a percentage of his wages during his short-term stay on Teesside.

The left-back spent a spell on loan at Boro two seasons ago, notching 12 assists to help Michael Carrick's men to the play-off semi-final before losing to Coventry City.

He then joined Luton Town following their promotion, but was loaned to City last January and then that loan move to the MKM Stadium was made permanent in the summer, with the Tigers agreeing a £4m deal with Hatters. But Giles has failed to live up to the expectation and boss Ruben Selles has opted to allow him to return.

Boro spent much of the summer trying to persuade City to do a cut-price deal for the Telford-born player, but the East Yorkshire club resisted before finally relenting last week. And Giles admits he hopes the deal will be made permanent in the summer.

"It feels amazing, absolutely amazing. It's really disappointing not to come away with anything, but from my point of view, the reception I got from the fans, I can't ask for anything more than that," he told BBC Tees after coming off the bench at Preston, just prior to the Lillywhites' winning goal. "I'm grateful to them."

He added: "Yes (there's a pull to Boro), I think that's because of the love and support everyone has always shown me. It doesn't go unnoticed. I see it, I feel it. Since I left (Boro), the last few years have been a learning curve for me, but I've always felt that love here, and it has never gone away. When the opportunity came to come back, and I've been close in previous windows, when this opportunity was concrete to come back, it was a no-brainer for me."

"I don't know, listen, football's football," Giles said when asked if he wishes he'd have made his initial loan on Teesside permanent. "Things happen. The move happened for me to go to Luton, it was an opportunity to go and play in the Premier League, something I've always wanted to do since I was a little boy. There's clubs negotiating things as well, it wasn't just all me saying I want to go to Luton, it wasn't that at all. That's the beauty of football and things happen.

"It was tough to walk away when the interest was still there, but everything happens for a reason and I'm back here now and I'm looking to right the wrongs if you like to come back and finish what we started.

"Of course, I would. Like I said previously, sometimes things are out of my control," Giles said when asked specifically if he'd like to make the 'marriage permanent'.

"I've just got to focus on the here and now. We have 18–17 games to play, and I will look to give my all in those games, and what will be, will be. But, obviously, of course, I would love to."

Speaking about bringing Giles back to the club two years on from when he was first signed by Carrick, the Boro chief praised the work done in the past few days, which also saw George Edmundson and Morgan Whittaker arrive, before the 2-1 defeat at Preston on Saturday.

"It's been a positive few days with the result in midweek and Ryan coming back, George (Edmundson) signing permanently, and Morgan," the former Manchester United midfielder said. "It's been a real positive few days leading to this. We feel empty now and naturally so.

"I don't have to explain to you what Ryan brings. We know that. He's a little bit different to Neto. But I thought Neto played really well today, and it gives us a different option."
