Hull FC make Aidan Sezer captain call with selection process explained
Aidan Sezer has promised to back up his words with actions after earning the Hull FC captaincy for the 2025 season. The half-back has become the club's first Australian-born captain since 2011 and will lead out John Cartwright's side following a selection process from his fellow players and the club's coaching staff.
Hull Live understands that Sezer earned the majority of the vote, which was cast this pre-season. The former Wests Tigers half-back has become a popular member of the squad this winter, knuckling down under Cartwright, who he has previously worked with in the NRL.
The 33-year-old is one of four new quota players at the club, joining the likes of Jordan Rapana, Cade Cust, and John Asiata, who has been appointed as the club's vice captain. He has previous experience of the Super League competition, having previously played for both Huddersfield Giants and Leeds Rhinos, not to mention Gold Coast Titans and Canberra Raiders back in Australia.

Showing leadership throughout pre-season, Sezer has cut a calm and composed figure, influencing the squad's core of young talent. He becomes the club's 61st permanent captain and joins an esteemed list of Australian-born players to take on the honour throughout the club’s 160-year history alongside the likes of Craig Fitzgibbon, Richard Swain, Greg Mackey, and Herbert Gilbert.
Speaking on his new role and what he can bring to it, Sezer said: "It’s a huge honour to be named as captain of this great club—it’s a club that has had some great captains before me. So this position comes with a big weight of responsibility, which I’m really excited for.
"The club has an abundance of leaders this season, so it’s a privilege to have been chosen. I always think a leader needs to lead with their actions, so your performance needs to correlate with that responsibility. So bringing my best attributes to training and game day is the most important thing for me. And then if you do that, the words you say hold some substance too."
Linking up with Hull last November, Sezer has wasted no time in getting reacquainted with Cartwright, who coached him at the Titans in the NRL. He added: "It’s been awesome to link back up with John. He’s been really honest and transparent with me right from the start when it was first discussed about joining.
"He’s been honest with me about the challenges ahead, and he’s given me that motivation and excitement. We’ve been in a few months now, and I’m loving forming those combinations and connections with people. I’m enjoying the process, and we’ll keep laying those foundations as we approach the games in the next few weeks."
Hull FC have also unveiled their new captain's run jersey for 2025. The blue and white hooped jersey features the names of all of the club’s past captains, as well as the club’s historic white star symbol on the chest.
