Hull FC will have a new captain in 2025, with former skipper Danny Houghton hanging the boots up at the end of last season. And with the experience added to John Cartwright’s squad this off-season, none more so than Zak Hardaker, Oliver Holmes, Aidan Sezer, Jordan Rapana, John Asiata, and co., there’s plenty of options to choose from. Here, Hull Live looks at five players who could get the role next year.

Aidan Sezer
Brought in to lead the side around the field, Sezer has over 200 games of experience at the top level. Speaking to Hull Live last month, it’s clear that the half-back knows his roles and responsibilities, and he’s determined to be the beating heart of the side, organising the plays and being that vocal and calming presence. He looks set for a big year and would be a solid choice for the role.

Herman Ese’ese
Last year’s Fans and Supporters Player of Year wasn’t just the best prop at Hull FC; he was one of the best in Super League. Better still, by the players own account, there’s more to come. Ese’ese is determined to get to the next level, and a leadership role may have him reach it, with the player keen to add his input at training and pass on his experiences.

Jed Cartwright
Who better than the son of the new head coach to set the standards? Speaking to Hull Live, Jed Cartwright has been massive on his defence, and he knows he has to work hard and fight in this team with his attack then coming to the fore. That’s exactly how Hull want to build into 2025, with Cartwright’s attitude on point. It stems from his father, with the duo, as per the players own account, very similar people with similar personalities.

Jordan Lane
The reigning club Player of the Year had a strong individual season in 2024, playing all but one game and landing himself in several positions. He played huge minutes every week and set the example in how to conduct himself, condition himself, and play. There was nothing short of effort and grit every week, and given that’s the level of hard work Hull want to base their game off, they could do worse than looking to Lane to set the example in 2025 as skipper of the side.

John Asiata
Perhaps one of the most natural choices given his captaincy at Leigh Leopards landed them a Challenge Cup win and two play-off finishes in Super League. Asiata is a born leader and, by many accounts, is like another coach at training, giving tips and tricks to the rest of the squad. So much of Hull’s attack is likely to come through the loose-forward, a proper ball player, and it wouldn’t be surprising to see him line up as captain next year.
