Never say never. That’s the message from John Cartwright when it comes to further recruitment at Hull FC this winter.

The Black and Whites have signed ten players so far for the 2025 season, with Hugo Salabio the latest recruit. They are also in the market for Deon Cross, as exclusively reported by Hull Live last month.

However, Cartwright is also open to further signings. The head coach won’t pass by opportunities to strengthen his squad should the chance present itself, with middle forwards still valued as a premium.

To date, Hull have the likes of Herman Ese’ese, Ligi Sao, Yusuf Aydin, Jack Ashworth, Brad Fash, and Salabio to call on, not to mention Will Gardiner and Matty Laidlaw, but the club won’t stop in their bid to get stronger throughout 2025, with Cartwright always looking at ways to evolve his squad, who returned to training last week and who are in action for the first time this year at Doncaster on Sunday afternoon.

"It never stops," he told Hull Live when asked about further recruitment. "You're always looking to improve. Once we start playing, things can change very quickly. We've got a good month of footy in front of us.

"We're just fine tuning now. We've had a long pre-season, and we've got a good block of football under us. We've got a good opportunity now over the next month just to fine-tune things. We've covered everything, and now we have to fine-tune it all and get ready for the season."

The Black and Whites have an official first-team squad of 30 players, with a further ten young talents training under Cartwright this pre-season. They are hoping to land Cross from Salford Red Devils, who face the possibility of releasing players this month due to recent financial difficulties.

Hull Live understands the club is confident of landing Cross, who can play in the centre and wing positions. However, the move still has a bit to go. As far as other recruitment goes, particularly in the forward positions, the door is very much open.
