Hull FC's contract calls in full including young talents and new quota factor
Hull FC have signed Denive Balmforth up to a new long-term deal, with Hull Live understanding that the Black and Whites have agreed to a three-year contract with their promising young hooker. That is the first bit of retention from the club this off-season, with CEO Richie Myler also revealing that other extensions could come in the near future.
As it stands, Hull have ten senior first-team players out of contract, with Myler also confirming that decisions are yet to be made on some players, who, as of December 1 last year, can speak to rival clubs about their futures for the 2026 season and beyond. Here, Hull Live runs over those ten players, with some big decisions for Myler, John Cartwright, and co. to make in the coming weeks and months.
Jack Ashworth
The prop gave everything when he was on the field last year, but that is the challenge for him this season: staying on it. Having two injury setbacks, Ashworth was limited to 14 appearances, playing exactly half of Hull's games. He will be looking to nail continuity in appearance this year, revealing to Hull Live that fitness has been his main focus this pre-season. With the right attitude and work ethic, a fully fit and firing Jack Ashworth is an asset, and at 29 years old, you can certainly argue that his best years are still ahead of him. A new deal could very much be on the cards, and that's exactly what he wants.

Harvey Barron
The young winger excelled in the second half of last season and was rewarded with the number two shirt. Picking up some confidence and credit, the homegrown speedster will now be looking to kick on under John Cartwright. A new deal seems a case of when, not if.
Tom Briscoe
Signed on an 18-month contract, Briscoe is in a good place as he enters his first full season back at his debut club. Offering vital experience to the young backs at the club, the veterans influence could be just as important off it as it is on. As for a new deal, time will tell, but age is no barrier to the 34-year-old. A lot may depend on the emergence of both Barron and Lewis Martin, who is contracted until 2026.
Zach Jebson
The young forward declared his passion for Hull FC to Hull Live last week. This is the club he has supported all of his life, and he is determined to make his mark. He played ten games last season, and if he kicks on, then a new deal will likely follow.
Will Gardiner
It's a big year for Will Gardiner, with the 23-year-old prop fully aware that he needs to take his playing opportunities. There's a confidence to play in the Super League, and under a new coach in John Cartwright, he has to go to the next level. Again, if he does, then a new deal will likely follow.
Matty Laidlaw
The young middle impressed Cartwright at Doncaster earlier this month before sadly falling to an MCL injury. He'll need to hit the ground running when he returns, but his tenacity will put him in good stead.
Jordan Lane
Hull's reigning Player of the Year deservedly received a starting shirt for 2025, and if he starts the year strong, then if it isn't already, his future at his boyhood club will become a formality.
Ligi Sao
If the new quota exemptions are passed for overseas players come 2025, then Ligi Sao becomes even more valuable as a non-quota player. He'll be looking to return to form this season after a discipline-hit year. His frustration was apparent. Hopefully now, brighter times are ahead.
Nick Staveley
The young forward is coming off the back of an ACL rupture, but it shouldn't be lost that he looked the part in Super League before his injury. He needs time and patience to get back to that level, but he is running well in training again, with a return around 4-6 weeks away.
Cobie Wainhouse
The young middle didn't get a first-team squad number for 2025, but he'll be gunning to earn one and a new deal. Coming off the back of an ACL rupture, he lined up for the academy at the back end of last year and will now look to make a big impact in the reserves. He looks in great shape and has the attitude to go with it. A promising player who will hopefully kick on.
