The 2024 season was a miserable one for Hull FC as a whole, but that’s not to say that it didn’t have its bright sparks. One of them was the emergence of Lewis Martin, who played all but three games in what was a strong individual account.

The young winger, who turned 20 last summer, crossed over nine times, but it was perhaps his hard work in the backfield and ability to dig in no matter what that earned him his plaudits, particularly in a struggling side that won just three games all season.

But for Martin, it was one of promise, with the Hull-born talent now set to kick on under a new head coach in John Cartwright come pre-season. He'll do that alongside teammate and close friend Harvey Barron, not to mention a veteran in Tom Briscoe, who currently has 92 Hull FC tries to his name.

On that front, here, Hull Live looks at Hull FC's top try scorer in each of their 27 Super League seasons to date, with Martin, Barron and co looking to follow on from some club greats of the summer era.

1998, Fili Seru & Alan Hunte: 13
After Tevita Vaikona was sold to Bradford, Hull brought in Fili Seru as his replacement. The Fijian winger landed 13 tries in his first season with the club, scoring on his debut at Whitehaven. Alan Hunte, meanwhile, was one of three players acquired from St Helens, the other two being Steve Prescott and Simon Booth. He also scored at Whitehaven on his debut and added five against Ellenborough in the Challenge Cup.

1999, Gary Lester: 10
1999 saw Hull avoid relegation by the skin of their teeth and almost suffer the unthinkable after severe financial difficulties and a visit from the Grim Reaper. Thankfully, the club was on the up again after the turn of the millennium, but not before Gary Lester's ten tries, including one in the final day win over Sheffield, steering them to safety.

2000, Steve Collins: 18
Steve Collins was ever present throughout the 2000 season as Hull found their feet once again. He played in all 32 games, scoring 18 tries in the process as the club started to rebuild under Shaun McRae.

2001, Tony Smith: 19
The former England half-back, and not Hull FC's former head coach. Also known as Anthony, the cheeky halfback notched up 19 tries as Hull finished third in Super League, including a hat-trick at Salford's former Willows home.

2002, Graham Mackay: 19
The Australian winger spent just one season at Hull and finished it with that folklore drop-goal against New Zealand in the Boulevard finale. His 19 tries included a hat-trick against Wakefield during a purple patch of ten in just five games.

2003, Colin Best: 21
Another Australian winger, Best was lightning-quick and was the first Hull player to crack 20 tries in a Super League season. He scored on his debut against Halifax, the club's first game at the MKM Stadium, and was prolific all year alongside his centre partner Richard Barnett.

2004, Shaun Briscoe: 25
Signed from Wigan, Shaun Briscoe's first season at Hull was top draw. He was a fantastic support player and managed a brilliant 25 tries throughout the year. He scored four at Bradford while Richard Swain got the Man of the Match award and also managed a further three against Salford as Hull finished in a credible third position.

2005, Nathan Blacklock: 22
Hull have had some top-bracket Australian wingers in the summer era, and Blacklock is right up there. The pacey winger scored 22 tries in his first season, including three hat-tricks against Huddersfield, Leigh, and most famously, Warrington—the one where Hull won 40-6 and Andrew Johns took the next flight home.

2006, Kirk Yeaman: 23
In arguably career-best form, Yeaman scored a staggering 21 tries in his first 15 and a half games before injuring his ankle in a famous 27-26 win at Knowsley Road. Cue Paul Cooke's booming right boot. Yeamo, meanwhile, was on fire in the left centre spot, scoring back-to-back hat-tricks and producing again when it mattered in the play-offs as Hull reached their first and only Grand Final appearance to date.

2007, Gareth Raynor: 14
Hull were slow starters in 2007, but they soon got their act together to reach the Super League play-offs. Raynor was in his element and scored two tries as Hull beat Huddersfield and scored two more as Hull, via Richard Horne, came literally inches short against Wigan the following week.

2008, Kirk Yeaman: 19
Hull struggled throughout the 2008 season, but Kirk Yeaman was certainly one to restore some pride in the Black and White shirt. He scored an impressive 19 tries, including two at Wembley, as Hull were edged out by a world-class St Helens side.

2009, Kirk Yeaman: 11
Hull's top try-scorer once again, Yeaman was one of only a handful of things to shout about in what was a dire season. Hull won their first five games of the year but ended up finishing 12th in a 14-team competition.

2010, Tom Briscoe: 16
Tom Briscoe's first spell at Hull FC was brilliant. A modest 16 tries to boot here, including four against Leeds, the club he would join in 2014, at Headingley.

2011, Tom Briscoe & Kirk Yeaman: 21
Hull's left edge was on fire in 2011, with Willie Manu also chipping in. Both Brisoce and Yeaman scored 21 tries each, and both made the Super League Dream Team and won back their England places at the end of the year.

2012, Tom Briscoe: 22
Ever present, Briscoe played in all 30 games in 2012, including a hat-trick against Bradford. This was his best return for the club, with an impressive 22 tries.

2013, Ben Crooks: 20
Breaking into the Hull team, both Ben Crooks and Tom Lineham made the Super League Dream Team in 2013. Lineham managed a fair 17 tries, with Crooks getting 20, including seven in two games against Wakefield and Huddersfield. He was 19 at the time. Mental.

2014, Jamie Shaul: 18
After Shannon McDonell's injury, a devastatingly quick Jamie Shaul stepped into the full-back spot with 18 tries in the 2014 season, including a hat-trick at Widnes. The Hull-born speedster was one of the bright sparks of Lee Radford's debut year in charge and would soon etch himself into club immortality.

2015, Tom Lineham: 26
A club record in the Super League era, Lineham's 26 tries is the number to beat. The winger scored three hat-tricks in what was Hull's 150th anniversary year, getting them at Castleford and then against Widnes both home and away. He also scored four in his final appearance against Catalans.

2016, Fetuli Talanoa: 17
The Tongan winger was a crowd favourite at Hull FC with his work in the backfield and acrobatic try-scoring ability. He scored 17 in Hull's first cup-winning year, including four away at Wakefield and a hat-trick against Widnes.

2017, Jamie Shaul: 21
Fresh after his Wembley 2016 heroics, Shaul added a further 21 tries to his tally in the 2017 season. He scored in the semi-final win against Leeds with a trademark breakaway try in what was his most prolific season for the club.

2018, Bureta Faraimo: 19
After a frustrating start with suspensions and concussion knocks, Faraimo came to life in a mid-season purple patch. He scored a hat-trick at home to Salford and managed 19 for the season, with 17 of those tries coming after the Easter period.

2019, Ratu Naulago: 15
One of many gems that former head coach Lee Radford unearthed, the Fijian flyer hit the ground running with two tries on debut at Wigan as Hull became the first side to win in Super League golden point. He managed 15 in his debut year.

2020, Carlos Tuimavave & Ratu Naulago: 8
The Coronavirus outbreak, a national lockdown, and then a club outbreak all severely hindered Hull's 2020 campaign. However, Carlos Tuimavave and Ratu Naluago were still able to rack up eight apiece as the side played just 21 games in a disrupted year.

2021, Adam Swift: 14
Scoring 14 tries in just 19 games, Swift was prolific in another disrupted season. 2021 wasn't quite as messed up as 2020, but it still became a farce with cancellations and disruptions by the week.

2022, Darnell McIntosh: 13
With normality resumed, the athletic winger finished his first year at Hull FC as the club's top try-scorer despite two injury setbacks. McIntosh scored a hat-trick against Toulouse and entertained many with his airbourne finishes.

2023, Adam Swift, 22
The pacey winger was the club's Player of the Year in 2023. It wasn't just his try-scoring, of which 22 came in 26 games, but his overall game that stood out. Swift was sensational with his work out of the backfield, and defensive reads equally so.

2024, Lewis Martin: 9
The young winger managed nine tries in 2024. Baring the Covid interrupted year of 2020, it is Hull’s lowest total in Super League to date. However, that takes nothing away from the 20-year-old, who was one of their strong performers every week. He finished well, but equally, he works hard and knows what it means to wear the shirt. He’s certainly one to watch in the years to come.
