Leon Ruan is set to become a permanent addition to the Hull KR squad following a successful trial. Rugby League Live understands the 21-year-old has done enough to secure a permanent contract with the Robins having linked up with Willie Peters' squad for the start of pre-season training.

Ruan was a free agent after securing an early release from his contract with Leeds Rhinos, where he has spent the last two seasons. Following that, Rovers agreed to bring him into their ranks for the start of pre-season. Now, the Robins have decided to give Ruan a deal to be part of the squad for 2025.

Initially a part of Wakefield Trinity's academy setup, Ruan pursued first-team opportunities at a young age and made the move to Doncaster aged 18. After catching the eye in League 1, Ruan was invited to train with Leeds, where he subsequently earned a contract with the Headingley club.

During the last two seasons, Ruan made eleven appearances for Leeds and also had loan spells at Doncaster, Halifax Panthers and Hull FC. Now, he is set to continue his career at Craven Park, where he will provide further depth in the pack for Willie Peters next season.

With club chief executive Paul Lakin acknowledging that they are likely to face salary cap pressures moving forward, Rovers are likely to recruit some younger players to maintain the required balance in their squad. Earlier this week, it was revealed that former Hull FC outside back Connor Wynne had been identified as a transfer target for 2026.

The Robins have high hopes for their up-and-coming batch of homegrown products, such as Louix Gorman, Zach Fishwick, Leo Tennison and Connor Barley. However, Rovers remain keen to sign external young players too, a strategy that proved to be crucial in launching the club's recent rise.

Ruan is set to be the latest example of that as Peters puts the final touches on his roster for the upcoming season.
