It's a big day for Hull KR off the pitch but on it, it is an opportunity for a number of players too. The Robins are in Amsterdam for their first and only pre-season friendly of the season, a game which will see a number of younger players feature alongside a smattering of first-team performers.

While the location and the occasion around it has been upscaled considerably, this trial game has ultimately proved an important fixture in the Robins' preparations for many years. It has been the launchpad for some players who have forced their way into first-team plans or been the first opportunity for younger talents to put themselves on the map. Louix Gorman was the standout performer in last year's game with Sheffield Eagles.

Two years ago, the first trial game gave Robins an almighty smack in the face as they were well-beaten by Featherstone Rovers. In Willie Peters' own words, that game was one of the most important lessons during his time at the club.

The opportunity for the youngsters is clear to see but for the first-teamers in action, it's a chance for them to get the jump on those not playing. Strong performances from the likes of Kelepi Tanginoa, Jack Brown and Jack Broadbent will give Peters plenty to ponder heading into round one. Likewise, indifferent displays could make his mind up the other way. And for the debutants, Eribe Doro, Lee Kershaw, Leon Ruan and Lee Kershaw, this is a chance for them to get their Hull KR careers off to a positive start.

The headlines will be dominated by the commercial aspects of the Amsterdam Challenge and it will be fascinating to see how Rovers latest project goes down. But on the pitch, this is an important game for the individuals given a chance to impress.
